There will be no big top over Harbour Station, but there will be a circus inside. Tonight, in what is becoming one of the most anticipated games in Sea Dogs franchise history, the Sea Dogs and Wildcats do battle in game two of the Brunswick News Rivalry Cup.But this is no ordinary junior hockey game. Tonight fans are all but guaranteed to be watching several NHL prospects. That includes Wildcats forward Kirill Kabanov.
"He has a really outgoing, (Alexander) Ovechkin-type personality," Moncton director of hockey operations and head coach Danny Flynn said. "He's got a great spirit about him and a real bubbly personality so it didn't take long for him to fit in with our guys."
Station Nation's Moncton Wildcats bureauchief had this to say on his first two games. "Played on the top line with 20's, Randy Cameron and captain, Scott Brannon. Makes watching the warm-up a treat. He's always playing with the puck and dribbling on his stick, etc, etc. First game, was all over the ice with a goal and an assist on four shots. So smooth with the puck, really in a league of his own. Was surprised at his play making abilities. Second game, was more statistically productive with a goal and three assists. Sat out most of the latter part of the 3rd period as the game was getting out of hand with the Moose doing a lot of headhunting, etc, etc. He is ridiculously good, and is still in all likelihood a bit rusty having not played in-game action since the summer Under-18 tournament. He missed 10 games, so if he plays all 58 games remaining, I could honestly see him potting 45 and getting around 80 or 90 points. All at 17. The league is lucky to have him in it."
Kabanov was cleared to play two weeks ago and is ranked to go in the top five in the upcoming NHL entry draft by almost every scouting service. He has lived up to all the hype in Moncton, scoring eight points in his first four games.
Tonight features eight NHL drafted players in Mike Hoffman, Nicholas Petersen, Yann Sauve, Simon Despres, Steven Anthony, Randy Cameron, Mark Barberio, and David Savard. There are four players that are predicted to go in the opening round of the 2010 NHL entry draft in Stanislav Galiev, Kirill Kabanov, Brandon Gormely, and Louis Domingue. Tomas Jurco is a projected first rounder in the 2011 NHL draft.
With the Wildcats winning 4-0 over the Rocket last night in Charlottetown, this game will have an impact on the standings and could cause a takeover of top spot in the Atlantic division.
