PRE-GAME: Halifax Mooseheads vs Saint John Sea Dogs

GAME DAY

WHO: Halifax Mooseheads vs Saint John Sea Dogs
WHEN: Tonight at 7:00pm
WHERE: Harbour Station

(Editor’s Note: The Q site is sort of back to normal, so here’s an abbreviated traditional SN pre-game)

VISITING TEAM: Halifax Mooseheads
Record: 1-2-0-0
Last Game: 9-3 win at Bathurst last night
Leading Scorer: Martin Frk: 3GP-1G-4A-5Pts
Notes: The Halifax Mooseheads will be without their two best goaltenders tonight. Mathieu Corbeil, who could still be at Columbus Blue Jackets camp if not for an injury, suffered a broken wrist last week and is still not ready to go. He is, however, good enough to backup American born net minder Anthony Terenzio. The Herd’s other goaltender, Peter Delmas, is away at Montreal Canadiens Training Camp… Terenzio is expected to start in goal tonight. He made 23 saves in Halifax’s 9-3 win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan last night… The Mooseheads began a six game venture away from the Halifax Metro Centre last night when they played in Bathurst… The Moose will be without Vancouver Canucks prospect Sawyer Hannay due to NHL commitments. Last season, the defenseman recorded a goal and five assists in 54 games with the last place Herd… questionable for tonight’s game is import Konrad Abeltshauser who was released from San Jose Sharks camp yesterday. He is expected to rejoin the team today and could play tonight at Harbour Station. Last year, he recorded five goals and 20 assists in his rookie campaign… Brent Andrews scored four goals in the Herd’s win over Bathurst last night. Shockingly, he was not among the players chosen for three star honors… former Sea Dogs defenseman Pascal Amyot was named first star last night with a goal and an assist. He was a team high +4… Andrew Ryan and Alex Souligny were healthy scratches last night…

THE FRK SHOW
Rookie sensation Martin Frk currently leads Halifax in scoring with five points in his first three QMJHL games. The import was selected third overall in the 2010 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft but just recently arrived in Halifax after a lengthy battle with the International Ice Hockey Federation.

He is expected to be a top prospect for the 2012 NHL Draft.

Along with Frk (pronounced “Ferk”), the Mooseheads also feature top end rookies Darcy Ashley and Luca Ciampini.

HOME TEAM: Saint John Sea Dogs
Record: 2-0-0-0
Last Game: 7-2 win vs Cape Breton last Saturday
Leading Scorer: Jonathan Huberdeau: 2GP-2G-4A-6Pts
Notes: Saint John will be without the services of defenseman Simon Despres (Pittsburgh), and forwards Mike Thomas (Edmonton), Stephen MacAulay (St. Louis), Stanislav Galiev (Washington), and Steven Anthony (Vancouver) who are all attending National Hockey League Training Camps… this is the first game in a week for Saint John. They are coming off a 7-2 victory over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles last Saturday. Tomas Jurco had a hat trick in the game… Jurco is off to a blistering start to his second season in the QMJHL. In his first two games, the Slovakian standout has five goals in just two weeks, earning him second stars honors in the Quebec circuit… goaltenders Frederic Piche and Karel St. Laurent split net minding duties in last weekend’s games. St. Laurent allowed four goals on 27 shots last Friday against the PEI Rocket while Piche let in two goals and faced 30 shots. It isn’t clear on who will start today… this is Saint John’s third straight home game to start the season and will not hit the road until tomorrow when they travel to Charlottetown, PEI… two of Jurco’s five goals have been game winners… Jonathan Huberdeau and Michael Kirkpatrick lead all Sea Dogs with a +7 plus/minus rating… this is Saint John’s last home game until October 8 against the Moncton Wildcats. The Dogs will play five road games during that stretch… Jonathan Huberdeau, Michael Kirkpatrick, Ryan Tesink, and Kevin Gagne are currently ranked one-through-four in QMJHL plus/minus rakings.

LAST SEASON VS HALIFAX
From the Sea Dogs’ website:

Saint John won seven of their eight matchups with Halifax last year, outscoring the Mooseheads 38-16 in the process. Several Sea Dogs players put up solid numbers versus the Herd in 2009-10, including dynamic winger Zack Phillips (8GP-1G-8A-9P), star centre Michael Kirkpatrick (8GP-2G-6A-8P), and ultra-dependable blue-liner Pierre Durepos (+10 rating in 8GP). Local minor hockey product Aidan Kelly, meanwhile, scored his first career Q-league goal against the Mooseheads last season - on February 17 at the Halifax Metro Centre (during a 6-2 win for Saint John).
