SAUVE SENT TO AHL MANITOBA

The Vancouver Canucks officially announced today that the concussed Yann Sauve has been issued to the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose. According to the Winnipeg Free Press, Sauve joined the club on Friday.

With the Saint John Sea Dog defenseman being sent to the AHL, it is very unlikely that the 20-year old will return to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League this year. Sauve signed an entry level with the Canucks a few months ago but is still eligible to return to Saint John for a fifth season with the club.

The 2008 second draft pick of Vancouver was not expected to return to Saint John this season and did not partake in any part of Sea Dogs training camp nor was he placed on the team’s initial roster.

If Mike Thomas returns from Oklahoma City Barons training camp, he will join overagers Christian Morin, Karel St. Laurent, and Michael Kirkpatrick as Saint John's 20-year old players. If Thomas returns, it appears Morin will be the odd man out as he has already been enrolled at St. Thomas University to play AUS hockey.

Although just about everyone believed he would play in the AHL this season, that hit a bit of a snag when Sauve was hit by a car in downtown Vancouver during rookie camp. He did not participate in any part of Canucks main training camp or pre-season.

The last time Sauve was spotted in the news was a couple of weeks ago when it was announced that he has been riding the stationary bike and that it was still unclear when he would return to the ice.

Sauve's car accident has made him a popular joke everywhere, though.

"And unless Cory Schneider gets hit by the same car that took out Yann Sauve while walking to the rink one morning, it'll be Big Red and Roberto Luongo in goal," writes Ian Walker of the Vancouver Sun.

In 61 games played with Saint John last season, Sauve recorded seven goals and 29 assists.

Also cut from Canucks camp today were: Victor Oreskovitch, Sergei Shirokov, Bill Sweatt, and Lee Sweatt.
