SEA DOGS NOTEBOOK

ST. LAURENT GOING TO CAMP
The Telegraph-Journal reports this morning that former Sea Dogs goaltender Karel St. Laurent has been invited to Vancouver Canucks summer development camp and rookie camp.

St. Laurent played in five games with Saint John at the beginning of the season before being the odd-man-out in the team’s overager situation. He posted a 4-1 record with a 0.901 save percentage and 2.95 goals against average.

The netminder headed west and joined the Surrey Eagles of the British Columbia Junior ‘A’ Hockey League. In the regular season he had a 19-12-1 record to go along with a 2.74 GAA. In the playoffs, St. Laurent went 10-6.

The T-J also reports that he has attracted attention from University de Quebec-Trois-Rivieres.

HF ON TESINK
Hockey’s Future had a question and answer session with Sea Dogs forward Ryan Tesink posted last week.

“I think I had a great year for my first year playing major junior hockey,” the Saint John native said about his solid rookie season. "I had a great start obviously, but I kind of slowed down a bit when guys came back [from injuries]; I got a little less ice time but I think I make up for it every chance I get.”

In 59 regular season games, Tesink recorded eight goals and 27 assists. In the post-season he added another three goals two helpers. Although it will be overshadowed by Alexandre Beauregard’s Game Six goal, Tesink netted the Game Four winner in the QMJHL Final in double-overtime.

HUBERDEAU VISITS LONG ISLAND
Jonathan Huberdeau visited the New York Islanders organization yesterday, reports Newsday’s Islanders blog ‘Isles Files.’

“It is unlikely that the 6-foot-1 center, projected to go third overall, will be available to the Islanders at No. 5, but the team wanted to bring him in for a pre-draft,” writes Katie Strang.

Along with visiting Boston during the Stanley Cup Final, Huberdeau has also gone to Ottawa. The Senators currently hold the sixth overall pick in the draft.

BRICKLY GETS INVITE
A Sea Dogs draft pick has been invited to Team USA’s National Junior Evaluation Camp.

Connor Brickley, who was taken in the seventh round of the 2011 QMJHL Entry Draft by Saint John, received an invite. The camp will be held in August and will be used to help determine Team USA’s roster for the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championship.

Brickley played this last season at the University of Vermont, collecting 13 points in 35 games in his freshman year. The chances of the Florida Panthers draft choice reporting to Saint John are still unknown.

A native of Everett, Mass., Brickley was property of the Lewiston Maineiacs but was not selected in the dispersal draft, allowing Saint John to scoop him up in the Entry Draft.

RED LINE REPORT
Per a Tweet by Willy Palov, here is where the Sea Dogs’ top prospects for the upcoming NHL Entry Draft are placed in the Red Line Report’s final rankings.

4. Huberdeau
18. Beaulieu
34. Phillips
38. Jurco

CHAMPS VS CHAMPS?
Way back on June 3, Bill Hunt of The Daily Gleaner wrote the following in his column:

I'll just propose it and let somebody from one camp or the other tell me why it can't work: How about a pair of exhibition games next fall - one at the Aitken Centre, one at Harbour Station - between the Memorial Cup champion Saint John Sea Dogs and the Cavendish University Cup champion University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds.

A Battle of the Champions. Two-game, total goal.

Pick a weekend in September and drop the puck. Maybe, if he's in town, have Mike Thomas drop the ceremonial first puck.
Cool idea, but it probably won’t happen.

THE SAVE
Video of Jacob DeSerres’ diving stop in open ice during the President’s Cup Final has surfaced on the interweb.

  1. I can't see Hub going before Landeskog, just for the size factor than anything else. I can see him going to Florida, though, or New Jersey. I would love to see him play for the avs, but I'll bet dollars to donuts that Landeskog will be called up for Colorado.

  2. I'll tell ya why the exhibition games wouldn't happen.. most of, if not all of our players will be gone to NHL camps (those who played a pivitol role anyways) and the rest are 20's. I'm sure we'd love to face a UNB squad with Ryan Tesink starting at forward against a 27 year old lol.
