St. Laurent Shines In Rookie Game

VANCOUVER 4 – CALGARY 3
The Vancouver Canucks needed overtime to defeat the Calgary Flames 4-3 on Monday night in Penticton, BC.
In a very entertaining contest as former Sea Dogs netminder Karel St. Laurent played very well, making 44 stops on the night including a huge pad save late in the third when the game was knotted at 2-2.

“Just to be here now I'm really thankful to get an opportunity and I'm just trying to make the most of it,” said St. Laurent to the Vancouver Province. The immediate goal, of course is to get to main camp, but that's still a few steps away.

“I just want to show what I can do,” he said.

St. Laurent played well on Sunday as well in relief of David Honzik. I was never a big St. Laurent fan when he played in Saint John but it’s great to see him playing so well on this kind of stage. Hopefully it leads him somewhere.

Yann Sauve picked up an assist on the Canucks second goal scored by Nathan Longpre. The defenseman finished the night with two penalty minutes and one shot on net.

Sauve was paired with current Sea Dogs defensemen Ian Saab. The former Lewiston Maineiac fought former Halifax Moosehead Logan MacMillan in the first period. Saab also had a shot on goal and a cross-checking penalty.

Steven Anthony also played in the game and was a -1 with two shots. According to the Canucks website he was on a line with Bill Sweat and Longpre.

Here are the highlights:

BOSTON 8 – NEW YORK ISLANDERS 3
The Boston Bruins beat up on the New York Islanders on Long Island, winning 8-3.

Former Sea Dog Brett Gallant was scheduled to play in the game on a line with Tony Romano and Mitchell Theoret. No idea if he did anything in the game.

WINNIPEG 4 – SAN JOSE 0
The Winnipeg Jets made a good first impression, beating the San Jose Sharks 4-0 on Monday night in Penticton.

Unfortunatly individual stats were not recorded. Former Sea Dog Michael Kirkpatrick hit a goal post in the game.

Kirkpatrick played on a line with Levko Koper and Klarc Wilson at practice on Monday according to the Jets website.

CANADIENS CAMP
Montreal Canadiens rookie camp opened yesterday in Brossard at the team’s practice facility.

“It’s my first professional camp, my first taste at pro-hockey,” said Beaulieu to the Canadiens website. “I’m really excited and really happy to be able to play with such a talented group. Being here as a recruit, I need to relax and absorb as much information as I can. It’s only going to happen once. You need to be a sponge, talk to the pros, not be shy.”

Montreal’s website labeled him “Spongebob” which may not have the best choice of awards given the stunning news that come out earlier in the day.

Canadiens rookie camp continues today.
