Sunday's Rookie Tournament Wrapup

BUFFALO 6 – COLUMBUS 3
Mathieu Corbeil allowed six goals on 37 shots in the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres yesterday afternoon in Traverse City.

Buffalo had a 2-0 lead after one and a 3-2 advantage after two. They blew it open in the third with three goals.

Former Sea Dogs captain Mike Thomas was a -1, had one shot on goal, and took an elbowing penalty in the third period.

The Blue Jackets have tomorrow off and face Zack Phillips and the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.

ST. LOUIS 2 – CAROLINA 1
Ryan Tesink had the tying goal as the St. Louis Blues went on to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 in Traverse City.

The ‘Canes led 1-0 entering the third period. Tesink scored at 9:44 and Jay Barribal netted the winner just over three minutes later to give the Blues the win.

Tesink also had a boarding penalty and two shots in the game while Stephen MacAulay was held off the score sheet and a was -1.

Jordan Binnington, the Owen Sound Attack goaltender who played in that epic overtime game against Saint John at the Memorial Cup, got the win in goal by making 17 stops.

OTTAWA 6 – CHICAGO 5
Chris DiDomenico was scratched as the Chicago Blackhawk prospects fell 6-5 to the Ottawa Senators yesterday afternoon in Oshawa.

The Blackhawks have tomorrow off before facing the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday afternoon in their final game of the 2011 tournament.

NEW YORK 6 – DALLAS 2
Scott Oke had a goal in the Dallas Stars 6-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Sunday evening in Traverse City.

Oke scored Dallas’ first goal at 16:35 of the first period. The marker was assisted by Nick Layton who played part of last season with the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds.

“The Stars got on the board at the 16:35 mark when defenseman Jamie Oleksiak carried the puck into the New York zone, put a puck on net and Scott Oke scored off the ensuing scramble,” described ESPN Dallas.

Oke was also a +1 and recorded one shot on goal. He played on a line with Layton and Cole Grbavac.

PITTSBURGH 1 – TORONTO 5
The Toronto Maple Leafs beat up on the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday night in Oshawa, improving to 2-0 with a 5-1 win.

Simon Despres and Alex Grant were paired together on defense for the Pens. Nick Petersen was a scratch.

Just 13 seconds into the game, Brandon DeFazio gave Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead. That would prove to be the only goal they would score all night.

PEI Rocket goaltender Maxime Legace, a free agent invite, played in net for Pittsburgh.

MINNESOTA 4 – DETROIT 2
Zack Phillips had an assist and was a +3 in the Minnesota Wild’s 4-2 win over Tomas Jurco and the Detroit Red Wings.

Phillips assisted on Kris Foucault’s first period goal. The Sea Dogs forward also served a too many men penalty and had two shots.

Jurco had two shots in the game.

FLORIDA 4 – TAMPA BAY 2
In his first game in a Florida Panthers uniform, Jonathan Huberdeau scored his first goal.

“I thought it was pretty good for the first game,'' Huberdeau told the Miami Herald. “This is just the first game and we haven't played together often. I'm looking forward to the next game.''

"Jonathan is Jonathan,” said Chuck Webber who coached the game to the Sun-Sentinel. “You could see the plays there, and see there are still things he's working on learning the pro game, but you see a lot of special talent in that young man.''

Huberdeau’s second period power play goal helped the Florida Panthers defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 in Coral Springs on Sunday night.

EDMONTON 7 – VANCOUVER 2
The Edmonton Oilers knocked off the Vancouver Canucks 7-2 in the second game of the 2011 Young Stars Tournament in Penticton, BC.

Former Sea Dogs netminder Karel St. Laurent saw some action as he replaced Victoriaville’s David Honzik after he allowed six goals in 34:48 of action. St. Laurent allowed a goal on 14 shots in 25:12 of action.

Steven Anthony played on a line with Nathan Longpre and Halifax’s Alexandre Grenier.

Former Titan goaltender Olivier Roy got the win for the Oilers.
