Wednesday Rookie Game Wrapup

DETROIT 4 – CAROLINA 1
Tomas Jurco missed his second straight game and did not play in the Detroit Red Wings’ 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday afternoon in Traverse City. The win locked up seventh place for the Red Wings in the tournament.

Jurco missed yesterday’s and Tuesday’s game with a lower body injury that, judging by a tweet sent out by the Slovakian forward himself, doesn’t sound too serious.

MINNESOTA 4 – DALLAS 1
The Minnesota Wild finished the Traverse City tournament in fifth place thanks to a 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars on Wednesday.

Zack Phillips had no points and an even rating for the Wild.

Scott Oke had no points and was a -2 for Dallas. The Stars finished in sixth place.

ST. LOUIS 4 – COLUMBUS 3 (OT)
Stephen MacAulay had a goal in the St. Louis Blues 4-3 overtime victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets yesterday. The win gives the Blues a third place finish while the Blue Jackets finish fourth.

Along with his goal, MacAulay had two shots and was a -1. The other Sea Dog on the winning side, Ryan Tesink, was a +1 and produced three shots.

Fredericton native Jake Allen backstopped St. Louis to victory, making 46 saves in total.

Saint John netminder Mathieu Corbeil played backup to Allen York.

Former Sea Dogs captain Mike Thomas had two shots for Columbus. He also left the game in the first period after taking an elbow from Jay Barriball. He would return in the second.

“Jay Barriball elbow on COL Mike Thomas into half-brds; Thomas bloodied, helped off ice,” tweeted NHL.com’s Mike Morreale.

VANCOUVER 5 – SAN JOSE 3
In Penticton, the Vancouver Canucks rookie squad upended the San Jose Sharks 5-3 on Wednesday evening.

Yann Sauve and Steven Anthony both had the night off. Ian Saab was paired with Adam Polasek on defense while Karel St. Laurent played backup to David Honzik.

Saab had no points and an even rating.

FLORIDA 4 – TAMPA BAY 1
Jonathan Huberdeau had an assist in the Florida Panthers 4-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday afternoon in Coral Springs.

“Thirteen minutes into the game the Panthers had their first chance on the powerplay and answered with a goal from Jonathan Hazen in front of the net,” writes the Florida Panthers website. “Jonathan Huberdeau assisted the goal and did a nice job setting up the one-timer.”

Judging by the amount of tweets and media coverage of the moment, the most significant story in the game was when French-Canadians Jonathan Racine, Jonathan Huberdeau, and Jonathan Hazen were all in the box for Florida at the same time. Oh. My. Goodness.

This was the final game for the Panthers in their mini-tournament.

According to the Sun-Sentinel newspaper, Huberdeau finishes rookie camp game action with two goals and two assists. He is expected to be invited to Panthers main camp.

Highlight city:

LOS ANGELES 7 – PHOENIX 8
The Los Angeles Kings led 6-3 entering the third period but eventually collapsed, losing 8-7 to the Phoenix Coyotes.

Pierre Durepos was held pointless but appears to have played solid defensively.

“Pierre Durepos is having an amazing first period,” tweeted the LA Kings blog Mayors Manor. “Very solid heads up play when LA almost got caught. He laid full body down; two blocked shots.”

Prior to the game, the ‘LA Kings Insider’ blog posted the defense pairings. Durepos was paired with Nicolas Deslauriers of the Gatineau Olympiques.

According to the stats sheet, Danick Gauthier did not play for Phoenix. Alexandre Beauregard, who took part in Coyotes rookie camp, did not make the trip to California according to the team’s website.
