Back At The Bob

GATINEAU, Que. – The last time the Saint John Sea Dogs played a game at the Robert Guertin Centre, they left the ice with an impressive piece of hardware.

On Sunday, May 15 (or May 16 if you were in Atlantic Canada) Alexandre Beauregard scored at 15:45 of the second overtime frame to give the Sea Dogs a 3-2 win in Game Six of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Championship Final, giving the club their first President’s Cup win in franchise history.

‘The Bob’ was rocking on that Sunday night. Stanislav Galiev scored just 4:10 into the first period but the Gatineau Olympiques would tie it up at 11:12 of the same frame on a goal from Philip-Michael Devos.

Fast-forward to the third period, Adam Janosik scored with 5:22 to go to give the ‘Piques a 2-1 edge. But with 23 seconds left in regulation, Galiev setup Jonathan Huberdeau in front to send the match into extra time. Beauregard would then end it in the second overtime stanza.

The Sea Dogs and Olympiques renew acquaintances for the first time since Game Six tomorrow night at 8:30pm.

When Sea Dogs fans think about the 2011 President’s and Memorial Cup win a few games will always come to mind. There was the Memorial Cup final victory over the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors, the epic overtime win against the Owen Sound Attack in the round-robin and Games Six and Four of the league final.

The Saint John – Gatineau series was quite a battle. Five of the six games were decided by one-goal and two of the matches went to double-overtime. Although the faces in the lineups will change over time, the series won’t be forgotten for some time.
