POSTSCRIPT: Sea Dogs 2, Wildcats 1 (OT)

A collection of recaps from last night’s 2-1 Saint John Sea Dogs overtime win over the Moncton Wildcats…

Our recap. To put it simply, the Sea Dogs played a solid game. They worked with what they had, put in a strong effort, and walked away with the extra point. Although it wasn’t pretty at times – like on that five-minute power play – it got the job done.

The Times & Transcript’s recap. "I think we did a lot of things well," said Wildcats head coach Danny Flynn. "Saint John was missing some key forwards, but they have a 20-year-old goalie and a veteran defence corps so the back end of their team is intact. They did a good job of making it tough for us to generate scoring chances."

The Canadian Press’ recap. Charles-Olivier Roussel scored 3:38 into overtime Tuesday as the Saint John Sea Dogs defeated the Moncton Wildcats 2-1 in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. Zack Phillips picked up two assists and now has the first 20-game points streak in team history – the longest streak in the league this season. Tomas Jurco also had two assists and Mathieu Corbeil made 30 saves for the win.

MonctonWildcats.com’s recap. The Dogs took the game 2-1 in front of a good crowd of 3965, 35 fans shy of one point towards the Rivalry Cup.

SN Live Blog replay. We don’t have much respect for Wild Willie after his pathetic performance against Fleaburn in that race a few years ago, but it is nice to see him back at 100% following his injury.

MISSING IN ACTION: The Sea Dogs were missing some of their big forwards again on Tuesday night. Stephen MacAulay (upper-body), Aidan Kelly (upper-body), Jonathan Huberdeau (broken foot) and Stanislav Galiev (upper-body) all missed the contest.

“Big win in ot for the boys in Moncton,” tweeted MacAulay after the game. “Sucks watching but glad we got the 2 pts. hoping to get back on the ice this week and lineup asap”

Ryan Tesink also missed the game. He was a game-time decision according to News 88.9 and did make the trip with the team.

November has been a rough month on the injury front.

BROWN BACK UP: Forward McKenzie Brown was called back up for this one. He had no points, shots, penalty minutes or hits.

ANDERSON: Stephen Anderson played again as well. He opened the scoring at 13:33 of the first period and generated plenty of other opportunities as well. He finished the contest with two shots, a hit and a +1 rating. He was named third star.

It has been quite a week for Anderson. On Friday, he scored two goals for Summerside. On Saturday, he scored for the Sea Dogs in their win over Cape Breton. He returned to the Capitals for their Sunday game and netted another pair of markers. Then, of course, he scored again last night for Saint John.

PHILLIPS: Zack Phillips got the point he needed to extend his streak early in the game as he helped setup Stephen Anderson’s goal in the first period. He added another helper on Charles-Olivier Roussel’s game-winner. The points extended his point streak to 20 games. Over that span, he has 12 goals and 26 assists.

VS MONCTON: The Sea Dogs are now 1-1-0-0 against the Wildcats this season. They fell 3-1 to Moncton on opening night at Harbour Station.

SEED: Jason Seed was nailed from behind by Olivier D'Aoust at 2:20 of the third period. D'Aoust was tossed from the game and given a five-minute major penalty. Seed stayed on the ice for a few moments after the hit before heading to the dressing room. He did not return.

It wouldn’t be a shock to see D'Aoust get suspended for the hit. But this is the QMJHL, where suspension lengths seem to be picked out of bingo machines at times.

SAAB: Following his hit on Seed, D'Aoust dropped the gloves for a short tilt with Ian Saab. The fight gives Saab 87 penalty minutes on the season and is now the league leader in the category.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Moncton had the league’s best power play entering the game but went 0-for-2 on Tuesday. Saint John also went 0-for-2 on the man advantage.

The Sea Dogs couldn’t get much of anything going on their five-minute power play. Yes, they are missing some of their best offensive players. But they still have Gauthier, Jurco, and Phillips and two defensemen that put up points in Beaulieu and Roussel. Hopefully the Dogs can have one PP unit rolling come this weekend.

GAUTHIER: The Wildcats bench and their fans were in uproar at the end of the third when Danick Gauthier put an elbow to the head of Brandon Gormley. No penalty was called. It will be interesting to see if this gets looked at by the league.

LIGHTS: Impressive light show during the pre-game stuff at the Coliseum. Lasers and everything. (pictured above)

WILDCATS PRE-GAME: I listened to the Wildcats pre-game show on News 91.9 before the game. What a show. Has sound effects and everything. Exceptionally well down.

QUICK HITS: Zack Phillips and Tomas Jurco assisted on both Saint John goals… Nathan Beaulieu had a Saint John high four shots… Zack Phillips was +2… Danick Gauthier had three hits… Patrick Delisle-Houde had five shots for Moncton… James Melindy had five hits.

NEXT GAME: The Shawinigan Cataractes are on town on Saturday at 7pm. Get ready.
