PLAYER OF THE WEEK

One month in and Jonathan Huberdeau has won just about everything.

After being named the QMJHL first star of the week on Monday and third star of the month earlier today, the Canadian Hockey League named the Sea Dogs captain the player of week.

From the CHL release:

Huberdeau helped extend the Sea Dogs’ winning streak to seven games with a pair of victories beginning Friday night with a two-goal performance as second star of a 6-3 win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.  He then picked up four points including a goal and three assists on Saturday in a 6-0 win over the Chicoutimi Sagueneens on a night when the Sea Dogs celebrated their 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup title by raising their Championship Banners to the rafters of Harbour Station.

Huberdeau is the first QMJHL player to win the award this season.

UP NEXT

The Sea Dogs begin yet another three-game road trip through Quebec tomorrow night when they take on the Rimouski Oceanic. Game time is 8:30pm.

After playing in Rimouski, Saint John well travel to Baie-Comeau for back-to-back games against the revamped Drakkar on Friday and Saturday.

This is the third Quebec road trip for the Sea Dogs this season. They don’t return to the province for a three game trek until February.

CANADA EAST

Sea Dogs prospects Stephen Anderson and Colin Campbell both failed in their attempt to crack the Ontario Canada East roster for the upcoming World Junior A Challenge.

None of the four Maritime players that were invited to the camp made the team. Every player that made the squad is from Ontario.

HOT PLAYER

In this week’s edition of Sportsnet.ca’s World Junior Power Rankings, Jonathan Huberdeau is once again a hot player.

Huberdeau is closing in on Zack Phillips for the Sea Dogs' scoring lead after another strong week. The sniping forward scored three times and picked up three assists in two games last week with an impressive plus-5 rating. Huberdeau's 22 points in 10 games is just three shy of the team lead set by Phillips, who has played in four more games.

THOMAS

Mike Thomas, who captained the Sea Dogs to the Memorial Cup last season, was unable to attend Saturday’s ‘Night of Champions’ at Harbour Station. He tweeted about it.

In 10 games with the American Hockey League’s Springfield Falcons, Thomas has a goal and two assists.

DESPRES UPDATE

The Citizen’s Voice newspaper had a feature on Simon Despres last weekend, discussing his adjustment from junior hockey to the pro ranks.

"It was huge. It capped off a long, nice career in junior," the former Sea Dogs defenseman said of his Memorial Cup win. "I played four years for the same team. Finishing it off like that, with a Memorial Cup, we had just a great year. We never wanted it to end."

On his apartment:

"Fully furnished, all utilities, wi-fi internet. I just have to bring my clothes," Despres said. "They just gave me a flat rate. It has a garage too. It's the best situation."

JURCO’S FIGHT

If you missed it on Friday night, Tomas Jurco dropped the gloves with Cape Breton’s Logan Shaw for his first career QMJHL fight.
