Charlie Coyle Is Good

The first day of the World Junior Hockey Championships certainly gave Saint John Sea Dogs fans some reasons to be excited about the second half.

After Jonathan Huberdeau recorded a goal and four assists in Team Canada’s 8-1 win over Finland earlier in the day, Charlie Coyle registered a hat trick in Team USA’s 11-3 win over Team Denmark on Monday night in Edmonton.

Along with his three goals, Coyle had five shots, a +3 rating and went 8-for-16 in the faceoff circle according to the International Ice Hockey Federation’s website. He opened the scoring just 24 seconds in, tipping a point shot past the Denmark goaltender. He added another marker in the second period and netted his third in the final frame. He was named player of the game for the Americans.

Coyle had three goals and 11 assists in 16 games at Boston University this season. He’ll be joining the Sea Dogs after the world juniors.

According to a tweet from the Boston Hockey Blog, “Coyle had a hat trick once during his 3 semesters at BU. It came in his first game in a BU sweater, an exhibition against UToronto.”

Also of note, Connor Brickley, whose QMJHL rights are owned by Saint John, left the game after a skate appear to clip his leg. The University of Vermont has denied recent rumours that he is close to signing with the Sea Dogs.

Team USA’s next game is on Wednesday afternoon against Finland.
