Sea Dogs Notebook

DOGS JERSEY IN C-BUS

Here’s friend-of-the-blog @CBJProspects sporting his new Mathieu Corbeil jersey at Nationwide Arena in Columbus over the weekend.

BEAUREGARD
Alexandre Beauregard has received an outpouring of support on Twitter since it was announced that he had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. From Simon Despres to Nathan MacKinnon, several QMJHL players, teams and fans have tweeted their well wishes to the former Sea Dog. The messages sent to him can be read here.

ROSZELL ON TWITTER
The biggest Sea Dogs related news of the week came when the legendary Tim Roszell joined Twitter. He gained nearly 100 followers in his first day and that number has since grown to 135. You can follow the Sea Dogs’ play-by-play man by clicking here.

For historical purposes, here’s a screen shot of his first tweet.

Also, we discovered this week – completely by accident – that News 88.9 finally has a Sea Dogs blog. Each game recap features Roszell's goal calls. Unreal.

FOOD DRIVE
The results of the New Year’s Rivalry Cup food drive are finally in. The teams will split the points because the two used different weighing methods.

“Generous Moncton fans piled food high at the Coliseum on New Year's Eve and the Wildcats were able to secure an industrial scale to actually weigh each food item, for a grand total of 1,911 pounds,” states a release. “Saint John raised a similar amount of food at its home game Jan. 2, with a total determined based on a national formula for calculating food bank donations.”

The real winners are New Brunswick food banks. That’s what it’s all about.

Moncton remains in the lead in the overall Rivalry Cup standings, holding an 11.5-10.5 edge in the competition.

DEADLINE RECAP
Willy Palov recapped the QMJHL trade deadline in his column on Friday. Here’s what he had to say about the Sea Dogs.

The Sea Dogs got a free injection of scoring when American Charlie Coyle left Boston University to join them. But they left themselves vulnerable by not adding a backup goalie and one more top-four defenceman. Still, they are still my favourite to win it all.

SLOW WEEK
It’s an incredibly slow week in the QMJHL with no games scheduled until Friday night. The Sea Dogs return to action on Saturday night against Halifax at Harbour Station. Tickets for that game are going quickly.

The Dogs then head to Bathurst to play the Titan in Sunday afternoon. They have a pretty sweet deal at the KC Irving Regional Centre for this game. From the Titan Facebook page.

Special at the canteen:
*Hot dog and a beverage(coffee, bottled pop or water)
$2.75 tax included (regular price $6.57)
(sponsored by Maple Leaf, Bens and the City of Bathurst)
*The first 1500 fans will receive a white towel, compliments of Peter Kohler Windows & Doors and Eddy Group.

COYLE AFTERMATH
The Hockey Writers has a feature on Charlie Coyle, Corey Trivino, and what it all means for Boston University.

BRICKLEY
It may be a good thing that the Sea Dogs didn’t sign the University of Vermont’s Connor Brickley. The Florida Panthers prospect, who had his leg sliced by a skate while playing for Team USA at the world juniors, is out indefinitely.

“Connor Brickley sustained an injury to the posterior aspect of his knee while skating with the U.S. Junior National Team at the World Junior Championships in Edmonton, Alberta. He is out indefinitely,” sated a UVM release, via the Burlington Free Press.

Brickley’s QMJHL rights are owned by Saint John.

TURK, KELLY SPEAK
This is over a week old, but here’s Gerard Gallant and Mike Kelly speaking to John Moore about the Maxime Villemaire situation. Again, this is over a week old.
