Cameron, Racine Both Suspended

SAINT JOHN – Jason Cameron and Jonathan Racine have both been suspended by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for hits during Saturday’s Sea Dogs/Cataractes game in Shawinigan.

Saint John forward Jason Cameron has been suspended four games for an illegal hit to the head on Shawinigan forward Kirill Kabanov. Not that the injury suffered should play a huge role in determining the suspension length (an illegal hit is an illegal hit – injury or not), but Kabanov did reportedly suffer a concussion on the play.

The play came at 8:54 of the third period in what was a 1-1 game at the time. Cameron received a five-minute major and game misconduct.

Cameron, who turns 19 next month, has four goals and seven assists in 53 games this season. He’ll be eligible to return on February 21 when the Sea Dogs host the Halifax Mooseheads.

Shawinigan defenseman Jonathan Racine has been suspended five games (UPDATE: Four games plus an automatic one-game) for an illegal hit to the head on Sea Dogs forward Jonathan Huberdeau. The Saint John captain was a bit dazed after the hit but stayed in the game, ultimately scoring the game-winner.

The play came at 16:33 of the third period. Racine was given a five-minute major and match penalty.

We really don’t have a problem with either of these suspensions.
