The Player That Didn't Want To Play There

On a Wednesday night in February, we assume there isn’t a whole lot to do in Baie-Comeau. So really, why not put your baby costume on and taunt Nathan MacKinnon?

Wow.

On Wednesday, MacKinnon, who the Drakkar drafted first overall last June but refused to report to Baie-Comeau, made his first appearance in the city since the draft drama. Just like Angelo Esposito when he played at Harbour Station, MacKinnon was booed throughout the game by the Drakkar faithful who packed the Henry Leonard Centre.

The 16-year old Cole Harbour native had the Mooseheads’ lone goal in their 2-1 shootout loss. MacKinnon didn't score in the shootout.

The Drakkar made a bold marketing move for this game, placing an ad in a local newspaper which, according to Metro Halifax, loosely translated to "come cheer on the Drakkar, your team against the Mooseheads and a player who made the choice to not come to Baie-Comeau."

This kind of ad seems a little excessive. “Come see the player who wouldn’t play here” is just asking for trouble.

That’s a whole lot of hate in B-C.

Speaking of John Moore, he interviewed Drakkar general manager Steve Ahern during the first intermission on News 95.7. Ahern dropped an f-bomb. What a night in Baie-Comeau.
