POSTSCRIPT: Sea Dogs 7, Eagles 4

A collection of recaps from last night’s 7-4 Saint John Sea Dogs win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles…

Our recap. It was another historic night for the Sea Dogs. The win gave the team a final record of 50-15-0-3, making them the first team in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League history to record three straight 50-win seasons.

SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. Danick Gauthier set a personal, family and franchise record with two goals in the Saint John Sea Dogs 7-4 win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Saturday.

CapeBretonEagles.com’s recap. Danick Gauthier had a pair of goals for the Sea Dogs while Dylan McGuigan, Stanislav Galiev, Ryan Tesink, Stephen MacAulay and Aidan Kelly each scored single markers for Saint John who improve to 50-15-0-3 on the season.

MISSING IN ACTION: Defenseman Charles Roussel and forward Zack Phillips were given the night off. Ian Saab served the third game of his eight-game suspension. Maxime Villemaire (knee) and Devon Oliver-Dares (collarbone) were out with injuries.

CALLED UP: Defenseman Jordan Moore and forward Dylan McGuigan played in their second straight games with the Sea Dogs. Moore finished the game with a -1 rating, one shot, and served a minor penalty.

McGuigan scored his first QMJHL goal in the first period, tying the game at 2-2. He had just one shot in the game and went 10/16 in the faceoff circle.

ROUSSEL: Charles Roussel worked with Tim Roszell on News 88.9 last night and provided colour commentary for the first two periods. Roussel did a solid job, and you can hear some of his work by listening to Roszell's goal calls. 

50: If you haven’t heard, the Sea Dogs became the first team in QMJHL history on Saturday to record three straight 50-win seasons. They became the first team to have three consecutive 100-point campaigns on Friday and the first team to win back-to-back-to-back regular season championships on Wednesday. So yeah, it’s been a good week and a good three years for the Sea Dogs franchise.

Saint John finishes the season with a record of 50-15-0-3 for 103 points. They had 53 wins and 109 points in 2009-10 and 58 wins and 119 points last year.

GAUTHIER: Danick Gauthier’s two goals gave him 47 on the season, setting a new team record for goals in a single season. Mike Hoffman previously held the record with 46 in 2009-10.

The new club record caps off an amazing and surprising season for the 20-year old. Gauthier had compiled a total of 29 goals in his three past seasons combined.

According to the Sea Dogs website, “his father Daniel had 45 goals for the Victoriaville Tigres in the 1989-90 QMJHL season.”

COYLE: Charlie Coyle had two assists, meaning he will end the season on an 11-game point streak. He has gotten assists in seven straight contests. Coyle has also gotten a point in 11 straight road games.

The former Boston University Terrier finishes the season with 15 goals and 23 assists in just 23 games.

VS CB: The Sea Dogs finish the season with a record of 7-1-0-0 against the Screaming Eagles while Cape Breton finishes with a 1-7-0-0 record against Saint John.

BAD START: Saint John got off to a bad start on Saturday and found themselves down 2-0 less than halfway through the opening period. The Dogs had barely any shots on goal at the halfway mark of the frame. When Danick Gauthier got the Dogs on the board at 14:31 it seemed the spark the Dogs who had a strong finish to the period.

Saint John really turned it on in the second period, scoring four times and outshooting Cape Breton 14-4.

GREEN: The Eagles wore some sick green jerseys on Saturday. From the Eagles website:

The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Saturday night were wearing special Irish jerseys in memory of late President Mr. Greg Lynch. The jerseys were raffled off following the game... A total of $9,954 was raised and given to Kids Care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

NOTES:  Danick Gauthier had a team high five shots… Charlie Coyle had three hits… with four penalty minutes, Nathan Beaulieu hit the 100-penalty minute mark… Beaulieu was a team worst -2… Jason Seed was a team best +2… the Sea Dogs end the season on a three-game winning streak… Loic Leduc had four hits for the Eagles… Mikael Langlois was a -4… with two assists, Jonathan Huberdeau finishes the season with 72 points in 37 games…. Tomas Jurco returned to the Sea Dogs lineup after missing the past four games due to academic commitments in Slovakia… Saint John went 3/5 on the power play… more regular season ending stuff all week on the blog.

MONDAY: The Sea Dogs will hold their awards banquet tomorrow night at the Delta Brunswick Ballroom.

NEXT GAME: The playoffs begin next Friday night at 8pm at Harbour Station. The Sea Dogs battle these very same Screaming Eagles. The game will air live on Sportsnet.
