SN Live Blog replay. Harbour Station parking lot is a
mess.
MISSING IN ACTION: Forwards Devon Oliver-Dares
(collarbone) and Oliver Cooper along with defensemen Spencer MacDonald (bicep)
and Ian Saab (suspended) were all scratched for Saint John.
SERIES: The win gives the Sea Dogs a 1-0 series lead in
their best-of-seven quarter-final playoff matchup. Saint John has never lost a
playoff series when winning the first game.
CLOSE: Despite the lopsided score, Baie-Comeau was very
much in this game until about the halfway point. Saint John led 1-0 after one but
the Drakkar kept coming back. Tied at 2-2 midway through the second, Stephen
MacAulay scored two quick goals which seemed the knock the wind out of the
Drakkar’s sails. The Dogs would add two more in the frame to lead 6-2 after 40
minutes.
MacAULAY: MacAulay’s goals tied a team record. From the Sea Dogs website:
MacAulay’s brace tied for the second-fastest pair of goals in Sea Dogs playoff history, behind Michael Kirkpatrick’s mark of 27 seconds set in Game 6 of the 2010 President’s Cup final, and tying Phillips, who did it on the way to a four-goal game in last year’s playoff opener.
COYLE: Charlie Coyle just keeps on rolling. Coyle scored
his 10th of the playoffs in just his fifth post-season game in the
first period, using his strength to get the puck over Philippe Cadorette’s pad
while falling in the crease area. He also added two assists.
PHILLIPS: Big game for Zack Phillips. The Minnesota Wild prospect had two goals and two assists in the win and was named the first star of
the match. After ending the regular season in a bit of a funk, Phillips is off
to hot start in the playoffs. He has recorded four goals and 12 assists in just
five games.
POWER PLAYS: Both teams were firing on the power play as
Saint John went 3-for-7 on the man advantage and Baie-Comeau went 2-for-3. The
Drakkar have the league’s best power play in the playoffs so far with a rating
of 40.9%.
AHERN: Drakkar general manager turned head coach Steve
Ahern was upset over Jonathan Huberdeau not getting called for a penalty when the game was still tied at 2-2. He also told Le Soleil that he believes Saint
John’s weakness is in front of the goal where, he says, Mathieu Corbeil fought
the puck all night.
WORDS: Speaking of Ahern, he and one other member of the
Drakkar staff (either the equipment manager or athletic therapist) got into a war of words with some fans after the game before they headed down the
tunnel. Security had to tell some guy to shut up. Not sure what the Drakkar
staff are thinking responding to fans like that. Stuff like this never ends well.
NOTES: 5,390 were in attendance for the game. It is Saint
John’s largest crowd of the post-season so far… Coyle, Phillips, Ryan Tesink,
Charles Roussel, and Stanislav Galiev each had two assists… Tomas Jurco and
Galiev were each a team best +3… Danick Gauthier had five hits… Carl Gelinas
had two goals for Baie-Comeau… Tomas Filippi and Sam Carrier both had two
assists… Felix Girard was credited with eight hits… the Sea Dogs scored nine
goals and Jonathan Huberdeau was held pointless. Scary… Saint John has scored
43 goals in five playoff games for an average of 8.6 per game.

OUT OF TOWN: Last night’s Game 1 scores:
Halifax 2 at Quebec 4
Rimouski 5 at Blainville-Boisbriand 3
Chicoutimi 7 at Shawinigan 6 (OT)
Complete meltdown by Shawinigan last night. They had a
three goal lead in the third period and blew it. Former Sea Dogs Gabriel
Bourret and Alexandre Beauregard assisted on Jean-Gabriel Pageau’s overtime
winner. That’s awesome.
NEXT GAME: Game 2 of the series is tonight at 7pm at
Harbour Station.
Mr Ahern did not impress me very much during this game. Lack of class comes to mind. Mr Ahern started the game by chirping Max Villemare. Ok thats hockey but you see a tone. In the first period, Sam Carrier elbowed Johnathan Huberdeau in the back of the head at the blue line, once #55 made it to the bench, he received a pat on the back. Clearly headshots are encouraged. As far as the fan at the end of game, not sure who threw the water bottle first, but I did get wet, Shows you how this bench is run and once again, no class. Too bad because this team really looked good for 30 minutes last night.....Mike.
