POSTSCRIPT: Sagueneens 1, Sea Dogs 4

A collection of recaps from last night’s 4-1 Sea Dogs win over the Chicoutimi Sagueneens…

Our recap. The big story was the play of goaltender Mathieu Corbeil. The Sea Dogs goaltender played one of his best games of the season and made 24 saves for the win.

MISSING IN ACTION: Forwards Devon Oliver-Dares (collarbone) and Oliver Cooper (healthy) along with defenseman Spencer MacDonald (bicep) were scratched for Saint John on Friday night.

THE SERIES: With the win, Saint John now has a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-seven semifinal playoff series.

LOGO: There were President’s Cup playoffs logos painted on the ice.

GALIEV: Stanislav Galiev scored the game-winner at 2:18 of the third period. Galiev drove hard through the crease and pushed the puck and Christopher Gibson’s leg across the goal line to make it a 2-1 game. The Dogs would add two more to take it 4-1.

Galiev added an assist and had six shots on the night. He now has eight goals and 13 assists in nine playoff games which ties him for third in league scoring.

GAGNE: Kevin Gagne has very quietly had a solid season offensively. He recorded nine goals and 26 assists in the regular season and now has two goals and nine helpers in nine playoff games. Gagne had a big night on Friday, helping setup three goals.

COYLE: For only the third time this post-season, Charlie Coyle was unable to score a goal. He did contribute offensively though by recording two assists. Coyle is now tied with Zack Phillips with 23 playoff points which is tops in the league. Coyle was also a +2, had three shots, and two hits on Friday.

CORBEIL: Great performance by Mathieu Corbeil in the Sea Dogs net. He made 24 saves for the win and was named the game’s first star. He made two terrific stops in the first period when the game was still scoreless. If he doesn’t make those saves, this game could’ve had a different outcome.

Corbeil also picked up an assist on Galiev’s goal. He now has more points than Oliver Cooper, Ian Saab, and Grant West.

JURCO: Tomas Jurco was hit hard when driving to the net early in the first period. He took his time getting up and went slowly to the bench. He played one more shift but did not see the ice after that.

Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant said at his post-game press conference Jurco’s injury is “nothing serious” and that he would be surprised if he doesn’t play on Sunday.

GIBSON: It was easy to see why Christopher Gibson was a main reason why Chicoutimi upset Shawinigan. He was very good in goal and was rarely seen out of position. He made 29 saves in the loss and was named third star.

SUBWAY SHUFFLE: The building erupted when this happened in the third period.

NOTES: Jonathan Huberdeau had seven shots… Jason Cameron had three hits… Guillaume Asselin had four shots for Chicoutimi… the three former Sea Dogs were held pointless. Both Gabriel Bourret and Guillaume Cloutier picked up penalty minutes… Chicoutimi’s power play went 0-for-5. Saint John had quite a few shorthanded chances… former Sea Dogs captain Mike Thomas was at the game.

OUT OF TOWN: In the other semifinal, Rimouski beat Halifax 4-1.
