Game 1 of the Sea Dogs’ quarter-final playoff series is just a few days away. Saint John will host the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in Game 1 on Friday at 7:30pm and Game 2 on Saturday at 7pm. The series then shifts to Baie-Comeau for the next three of the best-of-seven.

CORBEIL

The QMJHL website had an article on Mathieu Corbeil last week.

“What goalie wouldn’t be going well when you have the team that I have?’’ Corbeil asked in the article. “The defencemen are probably the best in the league and our forwards are probably the best in the league, with our depth and everything. Plus, the experience of last year made us so much stronger this year.

“That’s probably why I’ve had so much success. If I would have been on any other team, (personal success) wouldn’t have shown as much.’’

Corbeil bounced back nicely from a rough playoff opener against Cape Breton. In the four-game first round series, the 20-year old finished with a 4-0 record to go with 2.00 goals against average and a 0.918 save percentage.

Yahoo! Sports has an article about Leo-Guy Morrissette’s in last week’s Telegraph-Journal.

“It seems like time has not tempered Morrissette’s ire since he was equally displeased when Coyle was signed, telling Le Nouvelliste reporter Steve Turcotte: “Une équipe qui achète les championnats, ça n’a pas d’affaire dans notre ligue!” or roughly translated: “A team that buys championships, has no business in our league!”

Our thoughts on Morrissette: get with the times, man.

THE CALDER

ESPN’s Sean Allen names Jonathan Huberdeau one of the early candidates for next year’s Calder Trophy.

“He missed time with a broken foot, limiting his playing time, but has clearly shown he needs little more development before trying the NHL,” writes Allen. “He'll make a run at a second consecutive Memorial Cup with the Saint John Sea Dogs this season and be ready to break out in the NHL next season.”
