Cataractes Have Life

SHAWINIGAN, Que. – The 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup just got a whole lot more interesting.

The Shawinigan Cataractes defeated the London Knights 6-2 on Sunday night at Centre Bionest, giving each team a 1-1 record. If Saint John (0-1) wins tomorrow night against Edmonton (1-0), that would mean every team would be all square at 1-1 and that a tie-breaker game would be needed at this year’s tournament.

It was a solid performance by the Cataractes who scored three times in the third period. The game was tied 1-1 after one and Shawinigan led 3-2 after two.

Brandon Gormley had a huge game, recording two goals and an assist. Pier-Olivier Morin, Michael Chaput, Loik Poudrier, and Michael Bournival also scored. Gabriel Girard, making his first start since April 6, made 24 saves in the win.

London had goals from Josh Anderson and Andreas Athanasiou. Michael Houser, who has seemed shaky at times in this tournament, allowed five goals on 32 shots. Shawinigan’s sixth marker was an empty net goal with 1:45 left.

The Knights’ power play struggled again, going 1/6 and allowing yet another shorthanded goal. They have allowed three shorties so far in the tournament.

It was an entertaining game. Considering the amount of hits and rough stuff, you’d think these two played in the same league. Vincent Arseneau and Brett Cook dropped the gloves early in the third.

Shawinigan went 1/6 on the man advantage. They outshot London 33-26.

Shawinigan now has a couple of days off before closing out the round robin on Wednesday against the Sea Dogs. The Knights will play the Oil Kings on Tuesday.
