Our recap. The Saint John Sea Dogs edged their Quebec
Major Junior Hockey League rival Shawinigan Cataractes 4-1 on Wednesday night
at a packed Centre Bionest. It was nasty, nasty game with several ugly looking
hits, some late game fights and even some yelling between coaching staffs.

three points as the Saint John Sea Dogs beat the Shawinigan Cataractes 4-1
Wednesday to advance to the MasterCard Memorial Cup semifinal.

Cup champions are awake, and not a moment too soon.

Shawinigan (1-2), which will face the Western Hockey League champion Edmonton
Oil Kings (1-2) in a tiebreaker game tonight. Edmonton beat Shawinigan 4-3 in
the tournament’s opening game.

MISSING IN ACTION: The Sea Dogs were without forwards Devon
Oliver-Dares, Oliver Cooper, Dylan McGuigan, and defensemen Spencer MacDonald
and Jordan Moore and goaltender Richard Tingley. Cooper and Oliver-Dares both
played on Monday but were replaced by Jason Cameron and Grant West.
DEBUT: Grant West made his Memorial Cup debut. He had a
couple fights against Shawinigan during the regular season and dropped the
gloves again on Wednesday night. At 19:18 of the third he squared off with
Vincent Arseneau, a fight that really got the rough stuff started.
WARMUP: Ian Saab and Dillon Donnelly had words during the
warm-up. Nothing really came of it though as Donnelley was given a 10-minute
misconduct late in the game before he could do anything.
FIRST PERIOD: It was a nasty, nasty first period with
some solid hits and questionable stick work. Stephen MacAulay hit Marc-Andre
Bergeron in the neck with his stick and Morgan Ellis did the same to Maxime
Villemaire. Vincent Arseneau was in some discomfort after taking a big hit from
Villemaire.
During the first intermission, Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos
said he would prefer to see fights than all the stick work. That never really came to be until the final minute of play in the contest.
NO GOAL: Early in the second, the Sea Dogs pushed the
puck across the line well before play was blown dead. Replays showed it crossed
it line and Toronto said it crossed but referee Nicholas Dutil said he had
blown play dead so it was called no goal. Audio showed that the puck had crossed
the line a few second before the whistle went. That would have given the Dogs a
3-0 lead. Luckily, that non-goal never really mattered at the end of the day.

During the season we usually don’t have the option, as
fans, of seeing games in high definition with multiple camera angles and replays
along with the phone audio. But all these calls make you wonder about some
of the other calls throughout the season, doesn’t it?
FIGHTS: Ah yes, the fighting, the cheap shots, the
nastiness. There was plenty of it. A couple of good articles to read on it.

Both teams were fined $2,500 today.
BEAULIEU: Nathan Beaulieu made a great save in the third
period.
HUBERDEAU: Jonathan Huberdeau has now scored in six of
the seven Memorial Cup games he has played in in his career. He had two on
Wednesday and added an assist. He now has four goals and two assists for six
points which ties him with Michael Chaput for the tournament lead.
COYLE: Charlie Coyle assisted Huberdeau’s first period goal.
He now has a point in all three Memorial Cup games he has played in. He leads
the tournament in assists with four.
TESINK: It was great to see Ryan Tesink get rewarded with
a goal in the second period. He was all over this game, taking and making hits
while getting into it with Shawinigan players all game long.
PACKED HOUSE: It was standing room only at the Centre
Bionest as a loud pro-Cataractes crowd cheered on their squad. The crowd got
pretty quiet when Ryan Tesink gave Saint John a 3-0 lead. People were allowed
to sit on the staircases for some reason because apparently fire codes mean
nothing in Shawinigan. When the game got nasty late in the third, fans began to throw things on the ice.
NOTES: Jonathan Huberdeau had seven shots… Danick
Gauthier had three hits… Nathan Beaulieu had two assists… Jonathan Racine had
six hits. That probably includes his big time elbow to the face of Tomas Jurco... the teams combined for 72 penalty minutes.
