Things That Happened On Saturday

The Woodstock Slammers will play for the RBC Cup.

The Slammers defeated the Humboldt Broncos 4-3 in overtime in Saturday’s semifinal to advance to the national final. Woodstock will play the Penticton Vees in tonight’s 8:30pm contest. The game can be seen live on TSN2.

According to the Slammers website, “the victory makes the Slammers the first team from the Maritime Hockey League to reach the final since the Halifax Oland Exports won the national title in 2002, and the second East Region team in a row to play on the final Sunday – the Pembroke Lumber Kings were RBC Cup champions last year.”

Former Sea Dogs Andrew Langan, prospect Mackenzie Brown and training camp attendee Philip Fife are all on the Slammers roster.

In St. John’s last night, the IceCaps ended the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins’ season with a 3-2 victory in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal. The ‘Caps will play the Norfolk Admirals in the conference final.

Simon Despres was a +1 with no shots in the loss. Alex Grant had an even rating with four shots.

Grant finishes the Calder Cup Playoffs with two goals and five assists while Despres had a goal and an assist. Nick Petersen played in just three playoff games and was held pointless.

In the WHL, the Portland Winterhawks forced a Game 7 in the league final against the Edmonton Oil Kings. Game 7 is tonight in Edmonton.

And in the NHL last night, the New York Rangers eliminated the Washington Capitals on Game 7. Now the question is: will Dale Hunter have some kind of role with the London Knights at the Memorial Cup?
