Jackets Pass On Mathieu Corbeil

The Columbus Blue Jackets chose not to sign Mathieu Corbeil today, according to Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch.

Today was the deadline for National Hockey League teams to sign 2010 draft picks. The Blue Jackets selected Corbeil in the fourth round, 102^nd overall in 2010.

It’s not a huge shock that the Jackets chose to take a pass on Corbeil. He was never that spectacular after getting drafted. There have been plenty of debates on whether Corbeil was as good as his Saint John numbers showed or if he was greatly benefiting from playing on a stacked team.

Corbeil had the best season of his career this past year. He went 37-10-1 in the regular season with a 2.38 goals against average and a 0.911 save percentage. In the playoffs he went 16-0-1 with a 2.18 GAA and a 0.917 SV%.

In the second half of the season and in the playoffs, despite what many critics who simply look at the score sheet may say, Corbeil was very good. Particularly at times during the post-season, the 20-year old came up huge at times.

At the Memorial Cup, where the Jackets said they would be evaluating him, he struggled at times and never looked quite as comfortable as he did in the playoffs. He went 2-2 with a 3.51 GAA and a 0.881 SV%.

Corbeil was overager this past season so he'll have to find a place to play next year.

“Spoke to two scouts today about Corbeil,” tweeted Portzline last week. “If he goes back into the draft, one said he'd go in 4th or 5th round, another guessed 5th or 6th.”
