Ex-Sea Dogs Make AHL Debuts

Several members of last year’s Saint John Sea Dogs team made their professional debuts in the American Hockey League over the weekend but, for the most part, it was fairly uneventful.

Charlie Coyle had the most success, scoring his first AHL goal on Sunday in the Houston Aeros’ 3-2 loss to the San Antonio Rampage.

Here are the game highlights:

Coyle also added an assist and had three shots in the contest. On Saturday in the Aeros season opener against the Charlotte Checkers, “Sir Charles” registered two shots and was a -1. He is wearing his usual No. 3.

Zack Phillips, also playing with the Aeros, had a shot and served two penalty minutes in the two games. The Fredericton native is wearing his old No. 51.

The Hamilton Bulldogs have played just one so far. Nathan Beaulieu was a +1 and had two shots in Hamilton’s 4-3 shootout victory over the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday. Former Sea Dogs goaltender Robert Mayer picked up the win in goal.

For Grand Rapids, Tomas Jurco was a -1 in the match. The Griffins also played on Friday, falling 3-2 to the Milwaukee Admirals. Jurco had no shots and had an even rating in that one.

Stanislav Galiev and the Hershey Bears opened their season on Saturday, losing 4-3 to the Syracuse Crunch. Galiev, wearing No. 10, had a shot and served four penalty minutes in the game.

Galiev was interviewed by Caps365 earlier this week.

Danick Gauthier did not play for the Crunch this weekend. He is listed as No. 78 on Syracuse’s roster.

In other AHL news, Alex Grant had four shots and was a -1 in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins season opening 2-1 loss to the Binghamton Senators. Simon Despres was a +1 for the Pens. For the Sens, Mike Hoffman, who was wearing an ‘A’ on his sweater, recorded three shots, a +1 rating, and an assist on the game-winner.
