Sea Dogs Notebook

HALLOWEEN
In which Nathan Beaulieu and other members of the Hamilton Bulldogs show off their… laughs.

JERSEY AUCTION
The Sea Dogs are beginning to auction off the white jerseys players wore last season. The Sea Dogs website explains the entire operation that is being done through eBay.

PINK JERSEYS
The Sea Dogs announced Monday that few pink jerseys from Friday’s raffle remain unclaimed. They are:

#25 Mastrangelo – 3762
#27 Cooper – 4023
#30 Fournier – 4202

Steven Duda’s jersey was also unclaimed but has since been claimed.

Fans have until this Friday, Nov. 2 at 5 PM to claim their jerseys before they go to auction at a later date.

LEDUC
Former Sea Dog Alex Leduc has been suspended indefinitely by the St. Thomas University Tommies men’s hockey team because of “conduct unbecoming a student athlete.” According to HockeyScene.com, “during the third period of the Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey game between the St. Thomas University Tommies and the Saint Mary’s University Huskies on Saturday, October 27, Ryan said that Leduc showed clear intent to injure an opposing player.”

Brad Smith, the victim of the play, is believed to have suffered a broken ankle.

“In my opinion, it was completely out of frustration and was done thinking there would be no consequences,” said Tommies head coach Troy Ryan. “Smith was the target because he happened to be in a vulnerable situation and Alex took his frustrations out on him.”

Leduc spent parts of four seasons with the Sea Dogs from 2006-07 to 2009-10. His best came in 2007-08 where he recorded 41 points in 68 regular season games.

SUPER SERIES
The Subway Super Series begins next week with Team QMJHL taking on Team Russia. Saint John will be represented by forwards Jonathan Huberdeau and Ryan Tesink. Huberdeau told Sportsnet.ca that he is hoping to play on a line with Halifax Mooseheads star Nathan MacKinnon.

"That's why I'm really excited," the Saint John Sea Dogs' captain said. "Hopefully I can play with MacKinnon. He's a great player and I never got a chance to play with him. It will be nice.
"You see some good players and you're like, 'I would like to play with them' and this is the type of game you get a chance to play with them."

Game One of the series is Monday in Blainville-Boisbriand.

PRAISE
Marcus Cuomo got some high praise on Twitter after scoring his first QMJHL goal on Sunday.

PETERSEN
As the Sea Dogs noted on Twitter this morning, former Saint John forward Nick Petersen is leading the East Coast Hockey League in scoring with 14 points. Petersen has six goals and eight assists in seven games with the Orlando Solar Bears.

Petersen played his overage season with the Sea Dogs in 2009-10, registering 39 goals and 40 assists in 59 games. He added another seven goals and 21 assists in the playoffs.

COYLE
The Sporting News has an article on Mikael Grunland and former Sea Dog Charlie Coyle.

“Each league is a little different,” Coyle told the Sporting News. “NCAA, it’s more defensive, I feel like. They’re both great leagues. I chose to go to major junior, I felt that was the path for me, and I feel it’s a little more open, a little more offensive opportunities, stuff like that. Here, it’s a step up, and speed-wise, it’s faster. Getting used to it takes a little bit, but it’s good.”

Coyle has five goals and an assist in seven games with the AHL’s Houston Aeros this season.

TSN RANKINGS

No. 27 – Jonathan Huberdeau
No. 43 – Stephen MacAulay
No. 46 – Kevin Gagne

Former Sea Dog Scott Oke, now with the Rimouski Oceanic, came in at No. 35.

Player rankings are based on statistical production and are intended to value the impact a player has on the game.
