FINAL: Saint John 1, Blainville-Boisbriand 8
The Armada beat up on the Saint John Sea Dogs on Sunday
afternoon in Boisbriand, winning 8-1. The home team led just 1-0 after one and
4-1 after two but blew it open in the third.
It wasn’t a great ending to Saint John’s three-game Quebec road trip. The
Dogs won the first game of their trip, beating the Sherbrooke Phoenix 8-4.
Yesterday the Sea Dogs fell 6-2 to the Drummondville Voltigeurs.
On Sunday, Ryan Tesink scored Saint John’s only goal. The
Sea Dogs were able to fire just 18 shots on net. Goaltender Sebastien Auger
made 35 saves in the loss.
The Armada had three goals from Danick Martel, two from
Marcus Hinds, and singles from Marc-Olivier Roy, Stefan Matteau, and
Christopher Clapperton. Netminder Etienne Marcoux made 17 saves for the win.
The loss dropped the Sea Dogs back below the .500 mark
and are now the owners of a 10-11-0-0 record.
Christopher Clapperton headed to the box at 3:17, sending
Saint John to the power play. The Sea Dogs couldn’t get much going on the man
advantage.
The Armada opened the scoring at 6:25 as Marcus Hinds one
timed the puck past Sea Dogs netminder Sebastien Auger.
With 8:33 left in the frame, Oliver Cooper tried to jam
the puck but was stopped by Etienne Marcoux. It was Saint John’s first shot on
goal.
Saint John headed back to the power play at 16:19. Once
again, the Sea Dogs struggled against one of the top penalty kills in the
QMJHL.
Things opened up in the final minute as both teams traded
some solid scoring opportunities.
Shots in the opening frame were 13-5 in favour of the
Armada.
SECOND PERIOD
Jonathan Huberdeau fed Ryan Tesink on a two-on-one. Tesink
fired the puck on net and was stopped by Marcoux. But the Armada goaltender
allowed a rebound and Tesink banged it in. That tied the game at 1-1 just 50
seconds into the frame.
The Armada headed to the power play at 4:33. Marc-Olivier
Roy fired a shot past Auger at 4:47 to put Boisbriand back in front by score of
2-1.
Just 22 seconds later, a scramble in the crease ended
when Danick Martel beat Auger at 5:09 to extend Blainville-Boisbriand’s lead to
3-1.
Tesink had a great chance later on but could not beat
Marcoux.
Stefan Matteau made it a 4-1 game at 14:49. He snapped a shot
past Auger’s blocker on a breakaway to extend the home team’s advantage.
Stephen Anderson had a good chance soon after but was
denied by the glove of Marcoux. The Dogs had a couple more chances late in the
frame but once again the Armada ‘tender was there to keep the puck out.
Shots in the second stanza were 12-9 in favour of the
Armada.
THIRD PERIOD
It didn’t take long for the Armada to strike in the
second period. Christopher Clapperton gave the Armada a 5-1 lead just 21
seconds into the stanza.
The Armada headed to the power play at 3:06 as David Weckworth
was called for holding. Blainville-Boisbriand had a few chances but nothing too
serious.
Saint John headed to the man advantage at 5:09 as Matteau
headed off for high sticking. While shorthanded, Auger robed Hinds to keep it a
5-1 game. Once again, the Dogs couldn’t get much going on the power play.
Not long after the penalty ended, the Armada made it a
6-1 contest as Martel netted his second of the game at 7:20.
Saint John got yet another power play opportunity at 8:53.
You can probably guess how that went.
Some four-on-four action began at 11:57 following some
rough stuff. Then at 14:45, some more rough stuff created some more
four-on-four action.
Hinds scored at 18:41 to make it a 7-1 game. Blowout
city.
Things heated up with 17 seconds left as Marcus Cuomo and
Aaron Hoyles squared off. Cuomo picked up the instigator penalty to make this
game even more fun.
The scoring summary wrapped up at 19:57 as Martel completed
his hat trick to make it an 8-1 final.
Shots in the third were 18-4 in favour of
Blainville-Boisbriand and 43-18 overall.
Saint John went 0-for-4 on the power play while the
Armada went 1-for-2.
