POSTSCRIPT: Sea Dogs 1, Wildcats 7

A collection of recaps from last night’s 7-1 Saint John Sea Dogs loss to the Moncton Wildcats…

Our recap. The Sea Dogs ventured out into the snow to take on the Moncton Wildcats in their own rink on Wednesday night. This was a rescheduled game, the original game being cancelled due to a severe snowstorm at the end of 2012.

The Telegraph-Journal’s recap (paywall). The Moncton Wildcats and Saint John Sea Dogs are two different teams going in two different directions.

News 88.9’s recap. Featuring Tim Roszell’s goal calls.

SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. The Saint John Sea Dogs dropped their first game against the Moncton Wildcats 7-1 in a make-up contest in Wednesday’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without Jonathan Huberdeau (Florida Panthers camp), David Weckworth (lower body), Connor Donaghey (upper body), Jurij Repe (broken hand), and Spencer Smallman (healthy) on Wednesday night.

HIGHMORE: Matthew Highmore scored his first QMJHL goal in the first period last night. It would be Saint John’s only goal of the game. Highmore, playing in his first game since December 21 because of the World Under-17 Challenge and a death in his family, has a goal and three assists in 13 games this season. Hopefully it is the first of the many.

OUTPLAYED: The Sea Dogs were out shot 21-11 in the first and 21-5 in the second and trailed 7-1 after two. Those ain’t pretty numbers. Saint John did out shoot Moncton 8-6 in an uneventful third period.

GOALTENDING Although he faced just six shots, Alex Fournier did not allow a goal in the third period after coming in to replace Sebastien Auger. Hopefully that is a confidence booster. Auger allowed seven goals on 42 shots through two periods of play.

JASKIN: Dmitrij Jaskin continues to be a beast. The St. Louis Blues prospect had two goals, three assists, six shots, and a +4 rating last night. Jaskin now has 27 goals and 32 assists in 33 games this year. The line of Barbashev-Danault-Jaskin was unreal.

BARBASHEV: Ivan Barbashev continued his solid rookie season last night, registering two goals and two assists. He now has 39 points in 43 games, good for fifth in rookie scoring.

DANAULT: Phillip Danault scored his first goal as a Moncton Wildcat last night at 13:21 of the first period on the power play. He added three assists, six shots, and a +3 rating.

VS MONCTON: This was Saint John’s first loss of the season to Moncton. The Dogs are now 4-1-0-0 against their rivals from up the highway. The two meet again on Sunday at Harbour Station.

STREAK: Saint John has now lost five straight and are 2-8-0-0 in their last 10 games. The Dogs have been outscored 27-7 over their past five games.

STANDINGS: The Sea Dogs are still fifth in the Telus Maritimes Division and 15th overall in the league with an 18-25-0-0 record for 36 points. They are three points back of the Gatineau Olympiques who sit 14th.

NOTES: The attendance was 3,830. Solid crowd for a stormy Wednesday night… Moncton went 3/6 on the power play… Andreas Tsogkas had four shots… Steven Duda had four penalty minutes… Phillip Danault and Dmitrij Jaskin each had six shots… Saint John out hit Moncton 19-13.

OUT OF TOWN
P.E.I. 6 at Acadie-Bathurst 5 (OT)

NEXT GAME: The Sea Dogs host the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Saturday night at 7pm at Harbour Station.
