POSTSCRIPT: Sea Dogs 3, Mooseheads 2 (OT)

A collection of recaps from last night’s 3-2 Saint John Sea Dogs overtime win over the Halifax Mooseheads…

Our recap. The Dogs were Nova Scotia bound on Friday evening as Saint John travelled to the Halifax Metro Centre to take on the Mooseheads. This would start off a trying two-game weekend against divisional opponents for Saint John.

The Telegraph-Journal’s recap (paywall). Jacob Izacky scored at 1:34 of overtime to lift the Saint John Sea Dogs to a stunning victory over the nation’s No. 1 ranked Halifax Mooseheads on Friday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

The Canadian Press’ recap. At Halifax, Sebastien Auger stopped 43-of-45 shots and Jakub Izacky scored 1:34 into overtime as Saint John (18-20-0) ended the Mooseheads' (32-3-3) 18-game winning streak at the Halifax Metro Centre.

SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. The Saint John Sea Dogs visited the Halifax Mooseheads in Friday’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action and defeated the Mooseheads 3-2 in a thrilling overtime contest.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without Jonathan Huberdeau (World Juniors – Team Canada), Matthew Highmore (World Under-17’s – Team Atlantic), Olivier LeBlanc (World Under-17’s – Team Quebec), Jurij Repe (broke hand), David Weckworth (lower body), and Justin McDonald (mono) on Friday night.

Defenseman Ian Saab, who the Sea Dogs announced earlier in the day would be rejoining the club for the second half, did not play on Friday.

BEARS: Halifax fans had to wait until the second period to throw their teddy bears on the ice. Max Lindsay scored at 13:29 of the second to open the scoring.

DEBUT: The newly acquired Jeremy Doucet made his Sea Dogs debut on Friday night while call-up Connor Donaghey made his QMJHL debut.

Doucet, acquired from the Acadie-Bathurst Titan in exchange for Aidan Kelly, wore No. 6 and had one hit, one shot, and a -2 rating. Donaghey, called up from the Maritime Junior Hockey League’s Yarmouth Mariners, had one shot and was a -2.

MacAULAY: Big game for 20-year old Stephen MacAulay yesterday. He was involved in all three Saint John goals, scoring the Sea Dogs’ first goal and helping set up the other two. MacAulay, with Jonathan Huberdeau gone and Ryan Tesink and Kevin Gagne traded, is Saint John’s current leading scoring with 18 goals and 18 assists for 36 points in 34 games.

DUREPOS: 20-year old defenseman Pierre Durepos tied the game with 59 seconds left and Sebastien Auger on the bench. Durepos fired a point shot that beat Mooseheads goaltender Zach Fucale. The d-man now has three goals and nine assists in 15 games this season.

IZACKY: Jakub Izacky came through in the clutch, scoring the overtime winner. Izacky is having a decent season offensively in his first QMJHL campaign, scoring 10 goals and four assists in 33 games. This was the first time he had scored since that big comeback win in Moncton on December 14.

AUGER: Sebastien Auger was Sebastien Auger in net. He made 43 saves in the win. It was the fifth straight game that Auger faced 40 or more shots. He now has the league’s third best save percentage at 0.911.

EXTRA TIME: Saint John has been excellent in games that have gone to extra time this season. They are 5-0 in games decided on overtime and 2-0 in shootouts.

STREAK: Saint John has now won two straight games. On the flip side, Halifax’s 18-game home winning streak came to an end last night.

STANDINGS: Saint John improved to 18-20-0-0 on the season but still sit fifth in the Telus Maritimes Division and are now 14^th overall in the league. They are one point back of the Titan and have played three fewer games.

NOTES: Saint John has more wins this season against Halifax than against Shawinigan… Stephen MacAulay was a +2… Benjamin Hade and Justin Dickinson each had two hits… Austyn Hardie was a +2… Stefan Fournier and Darcy Ashley each had six shots… MacKenzie Weegar had three hits.
