POSTSCRIPT: Wildcats 7, Sea Dogs 0

A collection of recaps from yesterday’s 7-0 Saint John Sea Dogs loss to the Moncton Wildcats…

Our recap. Saint John returned to Harbour Station for their second game of the weekend on Sunday afternoon. They faced off against the Moncton Wildcats.

The Telegraph-Journal’s recap (paywall). Saint John Sea Dogs head coach and general manger Mike Kelly could live with the call, but what happened shortly after had him fuming during Sunday’s 7-0 setback to the Moncton Wildcats.

The Canadian Press’ recap. Alex Saulnier and Ross Johnston each had two goals and an assist and Alex Dubeau stopped 23 shots as Moncton (28-16-1) blanked the Sea Dogs (19-26-0).

SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. The Saint John Sea Dogs and the Moncton Wildcats met for the second time in a week, with the Moncton Wildcats shutting out the Sea Dogs in front of 3,867 fans at Harbour Station in Sunday’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

Moncton-Wildcats.com’s recap. The Moncton Wildcats used a 5 goal 2nd period to power them to a 7-0 shutout of the Saint John Seadogs Sunday at Harbour Station.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without Jonathan Huberdeau (Florida Panthers), Jurij Repe (broken hand), Connor Donaghey (shoulder), David Weckworth (knee), and Stephen Anderson (flu) on Sunday afternoon.

THE START: For the first time in what feels like forever, the Sea Dogs got off to a really good start. They had a solid first period and had the better of the scoring chances. They out shot Moncton 13-8 but could not beat Alex Dubeau.

DICKINSON: Good fight between Justin Dickinson and Kyle Haas at 8:55 of the first period. It was short, but there was a flurry of hard punches thrown between the two. It was Dickinson’s third fight of the season.

THE MOMENT: This game took quite a turn at 2:34 of the second as Oliver Cooper made contact with Jonathan Narbonne. Cooper was given a five-minute major and game misconduct for kneeing, giving Moncton a huge chance to open the game up. Narbonne was down on the ice and it looked as though he was in major, major pain. He was helped off the ice and went down the tunnel. He miraculously returned just a couple minutes later.

The ‘Cats scored three goals during the man advantage and led 5-0 after two.

Narbonne was booed for the rest of the game whenever he touched the puck. We’re not saying he wasn’t in pain on the play, but... it’s difficult to say he didn’t sell it to the officials just a bit. It certainly looked bad.

Narbonne told the Telegraph-Journal that it was a bad Charlie horse.

POWER PLAY: That Wildcats power play was the difference on Sunday. The ‘Cats scored four times on the man advantage and had seven opportunities. Saint John went 0-for-4.

TOP LINE: The Sea Dogs were able to keep Moncton’s top line of Dmitrij Jaskin, Ivan Barbashev, and Phillip Danault fairly quiet yesterday. Jaskin had an assist, Danault a goal, and Barbashev was held pointless.

AUGER: Sebastien Auger allowed seven goals 37 shots but certainly wasn’t terrible. There wasn't much he could do on some of the goals he allowed. His GAA went up to 3.26 and save percentage fell to 0.906. He has now played in 40 of Saint John’s 45 games.

DUBEAU: Despite the lopsided score, Alex Dubeau had to make some good saves especially in the first period. He made 23 saves for his third shutout of the season. He was named third star.

VS MONCTON: Saint John fell to 4-2-0-0 against Moncton this season while the Wildcats improved to 2-3-1-0 against the Sea Dogs. They meet again on February 15 at Harbour Station.

STANDINGS: Saint John remains fifth in the Telus Maritimes Division and 15^th overall in the league with a 19-26-0-0 record. They are three points back of the Gatineau Olympiques who are 14^th.

NOTES: The Sea Dogs wore their third jerseys… lots of Moncton fans at the game… Saint John fell to 10-13-0-0 on home ice this season… Phillip Danault had five shots… Mark Tremaine had three hits… Ian Saab had three shots… Maxime Villemaire had four hits… the Dogs return home to take on the Sherbrooke Phoenix this coming Saturday.
