POSTSCRIPT: Mooseheads 8, Sea Dogs 3

A collection of recaps from last night’s 8-3 Saint John Sea Dogs loss to the Halifax Mooseheads…

Our recap. Stephen MacAulay made his return to Harbour Station on Wednesday and burned his former team.

The Telegraph-Journal’s recap (paywall). Just before the national anthem ended, Stephen MacAulay grimaced as if transforming from his sentimental side to his serious side.

The Chronicle Herald’s recap. Maybe the Halifax Mooseheads wanted to repay the Saint John Sea Dogs for all the times they routed them the past few years.

Metro Halifax’s recap. As impressive as the Halifax Mooseheads have been this season, it should be no surprise they set a franchise record for wins in dominating fashion.

News 88.9’s recap. Featuring Tim Roszell’s goal calls.

The Canadian Press’ recap. Martin Frk scored three times as part of a four-point night and Jonathan Drouin chipped in with a goal and three assists Wednesday as the Halifax Mooseheads demolished the Saint John Sea Dogs 8-3 in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. The Saint John Sea Dogs fell 8-3 at the hands of the Halifax Mooseheads in Wednesday’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action. The 3,681 fans at Harbour Station gave returning Sea Dog Stephen MacAulay a standing ovation during a pre-game ceremony honouring the 20-year old.

HalifaxMooseheads.ca’s recap. The Moose continue to rewrite the record books.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without Steven Duda, Jeremy Doucet, Justin Dickinson, and Connor Donaghey on Wednesday night. All four scratches were healthy.

MacAULAY: There was a pre-game ceremony to honour former Sea Dog and current Mooseheads forward Stephen MacAulay last night. Sea Dogs president Wayne Long presented the long-time Saint John defensive forward with his Dogs jersey.

Playing in his first game against his former team, it only took 3:03 for MacAulay to get on the score sheet as he gave the Moose a 1-0 lead. He finished with a goal, an assist, one shot, three hits, and a +4 rating. It looked like he had scored again late in the second period but the goal was given to MacKenzie Weegar.

FIRST: Domination by Halifax in the first period. They led 4-0 and out shot Saint John 12-4. They scored at even strength, on the power play, and while shorthanded. It was not a pretty start by Saint John.

DROUIN: With an assist on MacAulay’s first period goal, Jonathan Drouin has a big time point streak going.

It’s the longest point streak in the league this season.

Drouin didn’t stop there, finishing the game with a goal, three assists, four shots, and an impressive +5 rating. He now has 86 points in 40 games this season.

FRK: Martin Frk had a good night, recording a hat trick just past the halfway mark of the game. Along with his three goals, the Detroit Red Wings prospect had an assist, four shots, three hits, and a +5 rating.

REPE: Defenseman Jurij Repe has been putting up some points since returning from injury on February 14. Thanks to a second period goal on Wednesday, the Slovenian has a goal and three assists in his past four games.

HIGHMORE: Forward Matthew Highmore returned to the Saint John lineup on Wednesday. He hadn’t played since January 30 in Victoriaville where he suffered a lower body injury. He had a strong first period, creating a couple of good scoring chances. He scored his second goal of the season in the third period as he capitalized on a loose puck. He was also a +1, recorded two shots, and went 50% in the faceoff circle.

AUGER: Goaltender Sebastien Auger was pulled in the second period after giving up six goals on 22 shots. Like most of the times he has been pulled this season, blame can’t be solely put on Auger. Alex Fournier took over in relief and allowed two goals on 18 shots.

WINS: The Moose set a franchise record for most wins in a season last night as they registered their 47th victory of the season. The previous team record was 46 set in 1998-99.

DIVISION: Halifax clinched the Telus Maritimes Division with last night’s victory. According to Herd History, it is the Mooseheads’ fifth division title.

VS HALI: Halifax improved to 5-0-1-0 against Saint John this season while the Sea Dogs fell to 1-5-0-0 against the Mooseheads. They meet two more times this season including Friday night at the Metro Centre.

STANDINGS: With a win over Shawinigan last night, the Sherbrooke Phoenix are now just three points back of Saint John for 15th overall. The Sea Dogs record is now 21-35-1-0 for 43 points.

NOTES: Defenseman David Weckworth also returned to the Sea Dogs lineup on Wednesday. He hadn’t played since February 10 due to some knee issues… the Mooseheads were without current/future superstar Nathan MacKinnon. He has been out with a knee injury… Halifax wore their black third jerseys… the Moose have scored 13 shorthanded goals this season, good for fifth most in the league… Sebastien Auger gave a nice blocker punch to Martin Frk’s back after he took out the Dogs netminder and net in the second period… it looked like Weckworth had scored his first goal as a Sea Dog in the third period but credit was given to Maxime Villemaire who got a piece of it in front… Konrad Abeltshauser, Jonathan Drouin, and Martin Frk were all a +5… Matt Murphy was a -2… Luca Ciampini had seven shots… Michael Abbott was a -4… Maxime Villemaire had six shots… Mackenzie Brown had two hits.
