POSTSCRIPT: Sea Dogs 1, Mooseheads 11

A collection of recaps from last night’s 11-1 Saint John Sea Dogs loss to the Halifax Mooseheads…

Our recap. Friday night was a bad night for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The Canadian Press’ recap. The Halifax Mooseheads finished the regular season 73 points ahead of the Saint John Sea Dogs and they showed why in Game 1 of their first-round matchup.

SERIES: Halifax leads the first round, best-of-seven playoff series 1-0.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without defenseman Jeremy Doucet (healthy) and Steven Duda (healthy) along with forward Connor Donaghey (healthy) on Friday night.

PRE-GAME: The Mooseheads were presented the Jean-Rougeau Trophy as regular season champions before the game. The Sea Dogs had won the award the three previous seasons. The Moose were also awarded trophies for most goals scored and best goals against average.

FIRST: Halifax dominated the first period yet in a strange way it felt like the Sea Dogs did… not too bad. The Dogs were outshot 24-4 but trailed just 2-1 after one. Sebastien Auger was spectacular.

MACKINNON: Nathan MacKinnon had both Mooseheads goals in the first period. He added two assists in the game and was a +4 with eight shots.

CAMERON: Jason Cameron scored Saint John's first and only goal, beating Zach Fucale at 12:48 of the first. There probably aren’t many who predicted Cameron to score Saint John’s first goal. The veteran forward had just three in the regular season and had no goals in 15 playoff games last year.

FRK: Detroit Red Wings prospect Martin Frk had five goals and three assists last night. His eight points and five goals were a team playoff record.

AUGER: Sebastien Auger was actually pretty good last night, making 31 saves in 31 minutes if action. But the goaltender could just not keep the Moose from scoring. Auger, playing in his first career playoff game, was pulled after allowing seven goals. Alex Fournier replaced Auger. Fournier allowed four goals on 21 shots.

SAAB: Veteran defenseman Ian Saab was given a match penalty for a cross check on Jonathan  Drouin early in the second period. The Mooseheads got a five-minute power play from Saab’s actions and they scored twice on it. Ugh.

According to the boxscore Saab was assesed a match penalty for high-sticking. That means he automatically is out tomorrow too.

POWER PLAY: Halifax went 4-for-10 on the power play. The Sea Dogs definitely took some pointless penalties last night, which made things worse. Saint John went 0-for-5.

SHOTS: The Mooseheads outshot the Sea Dogs 24-4 in both the first and second periods. Saint John managed to keep up in the third with shots 11 apiece. Overall, Halifax outshot Saint John 59-19. One year ago today, the Sea Dogs outshot Cape Breton 50-19 in a 13-4 Game 1 win.

DROUIN: Jonathan Drouin had six assists. He’s pretty good.

MACAULAY: Former Sea Dogs forward Stephen MacAulay had a goal and an assist last night. He was also a +1 with three shots.

NOTES: This was the first ever playoff game between the two teams… Telus lost the audio for several minutes in the first period. But props to whoever runs the scoreboard for fixing their spelling of Saint John… Jakub Izacky and Marcus Cuomo had even ratings… Stephen Anderson was a team worst -4… Noah Zilbert had three shots… Maxime Villemaire had nine penalty minutes… Olivier LeBlanc had three hits… Andrew Ryan was the only Moose without a shot… Martin Frk had 10 shots… Trey Lewis had three hits…highlights of this game made the first 10 minutes of SportsCentre this morning.
