REPORTS: Nicolas Roy Finally Traded

As expected, the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles have traded Nicolas Roy. The 16-year old forward was the first overall pick in this past June’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft.

According to multiple Twitter reports from RDS and Screaming Eagles play-by-play man Kyle Moore, the Eagles have traded Roy to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens for first-round picks in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Cape Breton will also receive compensation from the league for Roy not reporting. From the Cape Breton Post:

Since he didn’t report, as per league rules, the Screaming Eagles will receive the No. 5 overall pick in the 2014 draft as compensation. If a deal goes through, they’ll also get the last pick of the second round in 2014, along with any other assets they would acquire in a trade.

According to RDS’ Stephane Leroux, the Sags beat out the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, Shawinigan Cataractes, and Gatineau Olympiques to win the Roy sweepstakes.

Kyle Moore also tweets that he is “hearing picks may be sent back at a later date. Could be December or June.”

This deal has not been made official by the league yet.

The chances of Roy reporting to Cape Breton have been viewed as slim even before they selected him. The Eagles picked him anyway, choosing to go the same route Baie-Comeau did in 2011 when they took Nathan MacKinnon first overall. The MacKinnon saga worked out for all at the end of the day, and both Cape Breton and Chicoutimi will be hoping for the same kind of end result this time around.
