News & Notes From Wednesday's Game

Some stuff from last night’s game…
  • Shawinigan is now just three points back of the QMJHL’s final playoff spot following last night’s win over Saint John. The Sea Dogs remain two points back the final spot which is currently held by the Sherbrooke Phoenix.
  • Alexis D’Aoust was named the game’s first star, scoring two of Shawinigan’s four goals.
  • Noah Zilbert continues his solid play this month. With two goals last night, the 18-year old has scored eight of his 12 goals this season in January. He has also scored in four straight road games.
  • Jeremy Auger’s second period goal caused some controversy. Auger scored on a wraparound and the back of the net lifted off the ice. It was originally called no goal but ruled a goal following a lengthy review. Ross Yates was not happy and expressed his feelings in Le Nouvelliste.
  • With an assist last night, Thomas Chabot now has four assists in his past four games.
  • Another assist for Mathieu Joseph as he helped setup Zilbert’s third period goal. He now has six in the 13 games he has played in this season.
  • Shawinigan entered the game with the third worst power play in the league but went 2-for-4 in the game.
  • Saint John has now lost five straight against Shawinigan going back to the 2012 Memorial Cup. Dark days.
  • This was the first meeting of the season between the two. They meet again on February 20th at Harbour Station
  • The Sea Dogs were without forwards Joey Richard (shoulder), Stephen Anderson (upper body), and Samuel Dove-McFalls (sick) along with defensemen Michael Abbott (hand) and Alexander McQuaid (healthy). Goaltender Antoine Landry also remains out.

NOTES: Chase Gaudet, recalled from MHL Yarmouth this past week, made his debut as Sea Dogs backup… last night’s attendance of 2,246 was the smallest crowd at a Cataractes home game this season… Olivier LeBlanc had five shots… Will Thompson had two hits… Gabriel Slight had five shots.
