RECAP: Lights Out. Dogs Lose 4-1.

FINAL: Baie-Comeau 4, Saint John 1

SAINT JOHN – In a second period that took nearly two hours to complete, the Baie-Comeau Drakkar needed just 6:09 of that middle frame to seal a 4-1 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs on Saturday night.

A power outrage hit Harbour Station (pictured... sort of) in the second period and delayed the game nearly 90 minutes. It was 1-1 at the time, but it would be the Drakkar who would benefit from the delay as they scored three times in the second to make it 4-1. That is the way it would end.

Baie-Comeau certainly showed signs of why they are first overall in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Drakkar outshot the Sea Dogs 52-22 in the game, including 25-7 in the second.

Bokondji Imama, Charles Hudon, Valentin Zykov, and Charles Poulin all had goals for the Drakkar. Philippe Cadorette made 22 saves in the win.

Nathan Noel had Saint John’s only goal. Sebastien Auger was even busier than usual, making 49 saves in the loss.

The Sea Dogs won’t have to dwell on this game for long. They host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Sunday afternoon at 3pm to wrap up their five-game homestand.

FIRST PERIOD

After a Saint John scoring chance, Dominic Poulin took an interference penalty just 34 seconds in. Nothing happened during the Sea Dogs power play.

The Drakkar opened up the scoring at 4:49 as the puck went off the back glass and found Bokondji Imama in front who batted it in to make it 1-0. It was all Baie-Comeau for a while after that goal.

The Dogs went to another power play at 11:48 but once again the Dogs came up empty.

At 13:54, Saint John went to another man advantage. Finally, at 15:46, the Dogs got on the board. A lovely pass from Alexander McQuaid from beside the Telus ad found Nathan Noel at the rim of the circle. The Newfoundlander tied it at 1-1, allowing the Sea Dogs Twitter account to get a bit excited.

The Dogs had another power play 16:23 but it was cut short at 17:51 when Noah Zilbert was given a slashing penalty.

Shots were 16-10 Drakkar in the first. Saint John went 1-for-4 on the power play.

SECOND PERIOD

The first five minutes of the second period were filled with penalties. The Drakkar had a five-on-three advantage but couldn’t score. Sebastien Auger was solid.

Then, with 13:45 left in the second, the lights went out at Harbour Station. The power stayed out for well over an hour.

When the lights finally came back on, Charles Hudon had an open net but fired wide.

At 10:26, Auger took an elbowing penalty. On the power play at 12:01, Hudon fired a shot through traffic that beat Auger blocker side to make it 2-1 Baie-Comeau.

The Sea Dogs had a man advantage at 12:33 but couldn’t get much going.

Valentin Zykov made it 3-1 Drakkar as he stuffed the puck in at 17:09.

Charles Poulin then made it 4-1 at 18:10 as he beat Auger following a turnover.

It was all Drakkar in a lengthy second period. Shots were 25-7 in favour of Baie-Comeau.

THIRD PERIOD

Hudon scored early in the second period but it was immediately called off. The goal was reviewed and declared no goal.

Some four-on-four play took place 32 seconds in. During that span, Francis Turbide made a deke in front but was stopped by Auger.

Baie-Comeau went to the power play at 5:37. The Drakkar had some good pressure on with Maxime St-Cyr having the best chance but sending a rebound just wide of the goal.

During another power play midway through, St-Cyr had a breakaway but fired wide.

Felix Girard went to the box at 17:54. On a shorthanded two-on-one, Turbide was denied by Auger.

Shots in the third were 12-6 Baie-Comeau.

Saint John went 1-for-9 on the power play while Baie-Comeau went 1-for-8.
