RECAP: Dogs Win 4-1

FINAL: Charlottetown 1, Saint John 4
SAINT JOHN – Justice Dundas and Adam Marsh continue to produce for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The two each scored – along with Spencer Smallman – in Saint John’s 4-1 victory over the Charlottetown Islanders on Sunday afternoon at Harbour Station. Sebastien Auger made 35 saves in the win.

Dundas, picked up by the Sea Dogs from the Ontario Hockey League, scored his fourth and fifth goals in his seventh game with the team. Meanwhile, Marsh, a free agent addition from Chicago, netted his sixth goal in his ninth game with Saint John.

Daniel Sprong scored for Charlottetown. Mason McDonald made 31 stops in the loss.

The win improved Saint John to an impressive – and surprising – 7-2-0-2 on the season and into sole possession of first place in the Maritimes Division.

Saint John got the scoring going at 13:06 of the first. Olivier LeBlanc sprung Dundas on a long breakaway and the free agent addition made no mistake, making a nice backhand-to-forehand move and depositing the disc into the Islanders net.

Less than two minutes later, Smallman was behind the Charlottetown net and tried to centre the puck. His centering attempt went off David Henley and in to make it 2-0 Sea Dogs.

The Islanders had a 45 second five-on-three power play later on in the period but the Dogs were able to kill it off and hold a 2-0 lead after one. Shots were 17-14 in favour of the Islanders.

In the second, Sprong got the Isles on the board with his fifth of the season at 8:33. But Saint John quickly responded as Marsh walked into the slot uncontested and fired a low wrist shot past McDonald to make it 3-1 Dogs at 9:43.

The teams went back-and-forth the rest of the period. Shots were 10-10.

The third saw plenty of back-and-forth action. Matthew Highmore went off for slashing at 3:58 but Auger and the Dogs were able to kill it off.

Charlottetown pulled McDonald with around 1:30 left. At 18:58, Dundas scored into the empty net to make it a 4-1 final.

Shots in the third were 11-9 in favour of Saint John.

TURNING POINT/BIG MOMENT
Adam Marsh’s goal that came 1:10 after Daniel Sprong got Charlottetown on the board was huge. It really killed any momentum Charlottetown was gaining at the time.

  • The Sea Dogs were without goaltender Bobby Dugan (healthy); defensemen Braydon Blight (healthy) and Jack vanBoekel (upper body); and forwards Alexander Kealey (body soreness) and Matt Green (healthy). Green was scratched after warmup.
  • The cushion thing that is placed on one of the partitions on the glass between the benches came off in the first period.
  • With 4:06 left in the first, Sebastien Auger was down in some pain in his crease after making a save off of Kameron Kielly. JP Laciak came out to take a look at the Sea Dogs goaltender. Auger would stay in the game.
  • Would love to know how many breakaway’s Justice Dundas has had since joining the Sea Dogs.
  • Samuel Dove-McFalls fought Luc Deschenes in the second period. The Sea Dogs forward was given a game misconduct for “taking off one's own helmet or attempting to pull off an opponent's helmet, undo the chinstrap or his opponent's.”
  • Spencer Smallman has scored all four of his goals this season over the past three games.
  • Saint John hasn’t scored a power play goal over their past three games.
  • Only 2,286 at the game. 50/50 winnings were just $2,001.
  • Only five power plays were awarded in this game, with four of them going to Charlottetown. It was a classic Sunday afternoon game in October.
  • Oliver Cooper had four shots and a hit while Will Thompson had one shot.
  • Turkey.
