RECAP: Sea Dogs Win 2-1

FINAL: Saint John 2, Bathurst 1

BATHURST – Two third period goals pushed the Saint John Sea Dogs past the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, 2-1, on Friday night at the KC Irving Regional Centre.

After struggling to get anything going offensively in the opening 40 minutes, the Sea Dogs managed to get things going enough in the third to down the Titan.

Luke Green got things going at 4:01 of the final frame, scoring an outstanding coast-to-coast goal to tie the game at 1-1. Then 1:40 later, Mark Tremaine scored a shorthanded marker to give Saint John a 2-1 advantage – and that’s the way it would end.

As you can see by this handy map showing shots in the first and second periods, the Sea Dogs just couldn’t generate a whole lot of chances in dangerous areas.

Bathurst’s lone goal came at 10:02 of the second period from Campbell Pickard. Bathurst had some pressure in the final couple minutes of the game but could not connect.

Sebastien Auger made 27 saves in the win while Reilly Pickard made 27 stops in the loss.

TURNING POINT/BIG MOMENT

Luke Green’s coast-to-coast goal was the spark the Sea Dogs needed, igniting their struggling offense enough to pick up the win.

NOTES

• The Sea Dogs were without forwards Daniel Del Paggio (sick) and Matthew Green (healthy) along with defensemen Jason Bell (healthy) and Jack vanBoekel (mono).
• Bell, a healthy scratch, has just one point – an assist – in his past 14 games. He had seven points in his first seven games as a Sea Dog after being acquired during the holiday trading period.
• After missing the past three games with a lower body injury, Mitchell Dempsey returned to Saint John’s lineup.
• Sea Dogs equipment manager David Kelly, who had surgery this week to remove cancer from his neck, was indeed at the game, keeping his streak alive.
• For the first half of the game, the QMJHL webcast showed some cheerleading competition instead. Bizarre.
• Halifax lost in regulation time, so the Dogs gain some ground with this win.
