RECAP: Sea Dogs Win 3-1

FINAL: Saint John 3, Charlottetown 1

CHARLOTTETOWN - The Saint John Sea Dogs travelled to Charlottetown to take on the Islanders on Friday night. In a contest between the third and fourth placed teams in the Maritimes Division, the Sea Dogs came out on top 3-1 to move into second.

The opening frame didn’t see any goals and very few scoring chances from both sides. Both teams combined for just 13 total shots with seven coming from the Islanders and six from the Sea Dogs.

The middle stanza got off to a much more interesting start after Matthew Highmore took a penalty for high-sticking just 10 seconds in. Mathieu Joseph used his speed to break in alone and bury one past Mason McDonald at the 1:08 mark, giving Saint John a 1-0 lead thanks to the shorthanded maker. On a power play later in the period, Filip Chlapik would even the game at 1-1 with a wrist shot that beat Marc-Antoine Turcotte. Saint John would tally the period’s final goal when Spencer Smallman tipped a point shot up and over McDonald with just 46 seconds left in the frame.

The third period saw a lot of back and forth action between the two evenly matched teams but it was the Sea Dogs who break the ice, taking a 3-1 lead when Adam Marsh used his potent wrist shot to beat McDonald at 7:04. Highmore would later think he scored on an empty net but Jakub Zboril had gone in offside. The Sea Dogs would hang on for the 3-1 victory and secure their third straight win.

• Samuel Dove-McFalls and Kyle Ward are both sidelined with injuries. Austin Clapham was the only other scratch for Saint John.

TURNING POINT

Once again this honour belongs to Spencer Smallman who picked the perfect time to record his 100th point. In the dying seconds of the second period, Smallman made a very nice tip between his legs that got past Mason McDonald to give Saint John a 2-1 lead.

HIT OF THE GAME

Bokondji Imama had a big hit on Islanders defenseman David Comeau, which sent him over the boards and onto the Islander bench.

NEXT GAME
The Sea Dogs have a quick turn around, travelling back to Harbour Station to take on the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada tomorrow at 7 p.m. The Armada are coming off a 5-4 overtime defeat at the hands of the Halifax Mooseheads. The Sea Dogs will be looking to extend their winning streak to four games.
