Dogs Will Finish Third Overall

The Saint John Sea Dogs will finish third overall in the QMJHL standings.

The Sea Dogs were locked into the third spot with their loss in Cape Breton on Friday night combined with Shawinigan’s victory over Sherbrooke. Even if the Dogs win tomorrow and the Cataractes lose, which would give each team 92 points, Shawinigan would win the tiebreaker.

So, this means Saint John will play the team that finishes 14th overall in the standings. There is still a log jam at the bottom of the standings, so the Dogs will have to wait until tomorrow night to know who their opponent is.

Here’s what the standings look like tonight:
Every team in the league will play tomorrow beginning at either 4 or 5 p.m.

In other news…

  • The Sea Dogs will begin their first round playoff series next Friday at 7 p.m. at Harbour Station (note the start time). Game two will be on Saturday at 7 p.m., also in Saint John.
  • Saint John has been an honourable mention in the CHL Top 10 Rankings for six straight weeks now.
  • Le Driot has an interesting breakdown of the QMJHL’s best and worst teams since the trade deadline.
  • Stephen MacAulay and the Saint Mary’s Huskies will play Stephen Anderson, Mike Thomas and the UNB Varsity Reds in tomorrow afternoon’s semifinal at the University Cup in Halifax. The Reds advanced with a 5-1 win over the Western Mustangs while the Huskies edged Sebastien Auger (pictured) and the UQTR Patriotes 3-2.
  • In that Huskies-Patriotes game, Auger was named UQTR’s player of the game with a 30-save performance. MacAulay had two assists for the Huskies.
  • Mark Tremaine and the StFX X-Men will take on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in the other semifinal. Tremaine had an assist in the X-Men’s big 6-2 win over defending champ Alberta on Thursday night.
  • Meanwhile, the Huskies advanced to the semifinals following a 3-2 four-overtime win over Jason Seed, David Weckworth and Carleton Ravens on Thursday. Seed had an assist in the game. Unsurprisingly, this was the longest game in University Cup history.
  • Both University Cup semifinal games can be seen live on Sportsnet 360.
