Tuesday News & Notes

There is little room for error if the Saint John Sea Dogs want to finish second overall in the QMJHL standings.

The Sea Dogs currently sit in third place, one point behind the Shawinigan Cataractes with one game in hand. Saint John’s final three games will be played in Bathurst (16th overall, .431 winning percentage) on Tuesday and Cape Breton (7th, .591) on Friday and Saturday.

The Cataractes will play their final two games of the regular season at home on Friday against Sherbrooke (14th, .432) and Blainville-Boisbriand (13th, .447) on Saturday.

Given how Cape Breton has played of late, it certainly looks like Shawinigan has the easier schedule. But, the Phoenix are 1-1-1-1 against the Cataractes this season while the Armada are 2-0-1-0. And given the fact that you never really know how a team will play on the final weekend of the regular season, anything is still possible.

The ideal scenario for the Sea Dogs is to simply win all three remaining games, which would place them second overall no matter what the Cataractes did. Shawinigan currently holds the point tie breaker (regulation time wins plus overtime wins).

Saint John, by the way, is 6-1-1-0 against the Titan and 6-1-0-0 against the Screaming Eagles.

In other news…
  • The Sea Dogs announced Monday that they’ve recalled forward Jordan King from the MHL’s Amherst Ramblers. According to GM Darrell Young, King will remain with the club for the rest of the season.
  • King finished second on the Ramblers in scoring this season with 17 goals and 49 points in 43 games. The 18-year-old has recorded one assist in eight games with the Sea Dogs this year.
  • Former Sea Dogs forward Dawson Theede will not be playing against his old team on Tuesday thanks to a three-game suspension.
  • Thomas Chabot topped Hockey’s Future’s list of NHL drafted defenseman playing in the QMJHL. Jakub Zboril was third.
  • Former Sea Dog Oliver Cooper was named the MVP of the Charlottetown Islanders on Monday night.
  • Nice feature on former Sea Dogs goaltender Jacob DeSerres.

  1. Nice, but an old video on Jacob DeSerres. He's finished his university career with the University of Calgary Dinos, and moved on to the ECHL. But this season alone he's on his third team, he stated with the Colorado Eagles, then Calgary sent him to their ECHL team, the Adirondack Thunder and on Feb 11th he was sent to the Alaska Aces where he rejoins Ryan Tesink who was sent down by St. Louis from the Quad City Mallards.

  3. There is also a Deserres story about perseverance. His plan was to join a pro team after his Calgary Dinos season. He proactively planned it with his professors and the school to make sure he could take any opportunity without compromising his schooling. He was on an airplane two days after the Dinos were beat out at the CIS Nationals in March, 2015. U.of Calgary allowed him to defer his exams while his professors allowed him to do the rest of the assignments and papers by correspondence. He then wrote his finals when he got back in the summer. DeSerres graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and International Relations in the summer of 2015... Maybe that's the better story!
