D'Orio invited to Team Canada summer camp

Current/future Sea Dogs goaltender Alex D’Orio was one of the 34 goaltenders invited to Hockey Canada’s annual Program of Excellence Goaltending Camp on Tuesday. The event will take place June 9-12 in Calgary.

According to the Hockey Canada website, “the camp brings together some of best netminding talent in the nation with top Canadian instructors from across North America, and kicks off the evaluation period for summer development and selection camps at the under-17, under-18, and under-20 levels.”

D’Orio was one of the eight goaltenders invited in the under-18 category. Other notables invited in that age group include Windsor’s Michael DiPietro, considered one of the top Canadian goaltending prospects in years, and Jacob Stewart of the Saint John Vito’s. The full list can be found here.

The 17-year-old D’Orio was selected ninth overall by the Sea Dogs in last year’s QMJHL Entry Draft but spent the 2015-16 season in AAA. He is expected to be one of Saint John’s goaltenders this season.

In 25 games with the Quebec Midget AAA Hockey League’s Magog Cantonniers, D’Orio posted a 2.54 goals against average and a .910 save percentage. He also had a 2.10 GAA and .922 SV% in 14 playoff matches, according to Elite Prospects.

In other goalie news, the Moncton Wildcats signed netminder Matthew Waite on Tuesday. Waite played with the Chicago Mission U16 team last season.

Also, Alexis Gravel, one of the top goaltenders available at this year’s QMJHL Entry Draft, is playing the USA card.
