In exchange, the Sea Dogs receive a 2018 first-round pick along with second-round picks in 2018 and 2020.
Le Droit reported on Dec. 10 that Green had asked for a trade because he was unhappy with how the team was using him. The rumour popped up shortly after Saint John had used Green, an offensive defenceman, as a forward due to some injuries up front.
A couple days later, Green's agent, the well-known Allan Walsh, told the Chronicle Herald there was no truth to the report. Despite Walsh's claim, rumours continued to circulate from reporters on Twitter about Green's status.
“Luke is a good player and a quality young man,” said Sea Dogs president and general manager Trevor Georgie in a press release. “This was not an easy deal to make. It’s a good opportunity for him and we wish him all the best.”
The return for Green is decent - but it will look a lot better if the 2018 picks end up being high ones. There is, obviously, a chance the Sea Dogs deal these pick(s) away long before draft day.
The first overall pick in the 2014 QMJHL Entry Draft, Green has 18 goals and 68 assists in 148 career QMJHL games. He has added two goals and four assists in 18 career playoff games. This season, the 18-year-old has two goals and 13 assists in 27 games with Saint John.
Green was drafted in the third-round of this year's NHL Draft by the Winnipeg Jets.
Green's twin brother, Matt, remains with the Sea Dogs.
It'll be interesting to see what follows this deal - if anything. The Sea Dogs have lost a quality d-man while other teams, particularly the Charlottetown Islanders, have beefed up their backend.
The QMJHL's trading period ends on Jan. 6.

This is ridiculous as we are trying to make a run at the cup and now we are giving up good D men? If what I hear is true, I get the whole removing the problem from the camp before it spreads, but really? Sad day for the Dogs!
