Report: DiDomenico signs with Senators

Chris DiDomenico is reportedly returning to North America.

In a surprising announcment, DiDomenico's current team in Switzerland, the SCL Tigers, reported that the former Saint John Sea Dogs star will be joining the Ottawa Senators.

According to TSN, "the contract is reportedly for two years with the rest of the current season on a one-way deal and next season on a two-way deal."

DiDomenico will have to clear waivers though, multiple NHL reporters have tweeted.
The 28-year-old has spent the past five seasons overseas, playing with the SCL Tigers for the past three. This season, DiDomenico has eight goals and 28 assists in 46 games.

DiDomenico has also played with Team Canada at the past three Spengler Cup tournaments, which no doubt helped get him some NHL attention.

A sixth-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2007 NHL Draft, DiDomenico last played in North America in 2011-12 when he split the year with the AHL's Rockford IceHogs and ECHL's Toledo Walleye. He has never appeared in a NHL game.

DiDomenico will join his former Drummondville Voltigeurs teammate, Mike Hoffman, with the Senators. Oddly enough, Hoffman came to Saint John at the 2009 QMJHL Draft to complete the mid-season DiDomenico trade.

The Woodbridge, Ont. native was one of the first stars in Sea Dogs history, spending two-and-a-half seasons with the club before getting traded to Drummondville at the 2008-09 trade deadline - a trade that played a major role in setting up the glory days of the Saint John franchise.

In 203 career QMJHL games, DiDomenico recorded 90 goals and 161 assists. He added 19 goals and 56 assists in 43 playoff games, winning the President's Cup in 2009 with the Voltigeurs - although he suffered a major injury that forced him to miss the final few playoff games and Memorial Cup.

There's been quite a bit of Sea Dogs alumni chatter in the NHL of late. Tomas Jurco was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks last week and there are rumours that the Washington Capitals may move Stanislav Galiev.

The NHL trade deadline is on Wednesday.
