RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 5-0

FINAL: Cape Breton 5, Saint John 0
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs let a close game get away from them on Saturday night at Harbour Station.

The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles scored four times in the third period to edge the Sea Dogs 5-0. It was anybodies game heading into the final period - especially given how both teams were struggling to produce much of anything on the power play - but a couple quick goals set up a dominant final 20 minutes for the Eagles.

The Sea Dogs have had their struggles in third periods this season, now being outscored by a total of 25-9. Last Sunday's performance in Charlottetown was hopefully going to be a sign of the team turning things around - but apparently not.

Egor Sokolov scored twice for Cape Breton while singles came from Wilson Forest, Ryan Francis and Liam Kidney. Kevin Mandolese made 15 saves in the win.

Alex D'Orio made 36 saves in the loss.

The two teams meet again on Sunday afternoon at Harbour Station.

Cape Breton opened the scoring with a power play goal at 11:15 of the first period. The puck came to Sokolov on the goal line who then passed the disc in front to an open Forest. The Eagles d-man tapped the puck five-hole on D'Orio to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

Saint John did a good job at killing off a couple penalties early in the second period. Then, the Dogs went on a lengthy five-on-three man advantage but were unable to generate a lot of shots on net.

Cape Breton doubled their lead 22 seconds into the third period. D'Orio went behind his net to play the puck but had it stolon by Sokolov. The Eagles import went behind the net and wrapped the puck in before D'Orio could get set.

Just 55 seconds later, Francis came down the wing and fired a wrist shot off a corner post and in, quickly giving the Screaming Eagles a commanding 3-0 advantage early in the final frame.

Cape Breton took a 4-0 lead at 9:22. Sokolov redirected a point shot that got past D'Orio and sat on the goal line. Kidney was there, pushed the puck across the line to extend Cape Breton's lead.

Saint John didn't record a shot on goal in the third period until there was 7:55 remaining. Sokolov scored his second of the game at 14:54 to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead.
