Beaulieu traded on NHL deadline day

Nathan Beaulieu is now a member of the Winnipeg Jets.

The former Saint John Sea Dogs star defenseman was involved in one of the final deals made during this year's NHL trade deadline day. In exchange for Beaulieu, the Buffalo Sabres received a 2019 sixth-round pick.

The 26-year-old has three goals and four assists in 30 games this season. He's now recorded 11 goals and 65 assists in 314 career NHL games with the Sabres and Montreal Canadiens. Today's move marks the first time Beaulieu will call the Western Conference home.

The trade puts Beaulieu on a Stanley Cup contender, where he'll be used in a depth role. He's appeared in 17 NHL playoff games in his career, all with the Habs.

Meanwhile, former Sea Dogs forward Charlie Coyle, who played with Beaulieu during the 2011-12 season in Saint John, was traded to his hometown Boston Bruins last Thursday. In exchange for Coyle, the Minnesota Wild received forward Ryan Donato and a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Coyle appeared in his first game with the Bruins on Saturday, scoring a Jonathan Huberdeau-like shootout goal.

In another move made on NHL trade deadline day, the Carolina Hurricanes acquired Tomas Jurco from the Florida Panthers in exchange for the Cliff Pu. Both players have been playing in the AHL, so the deal essentially involves the Charlotte Checkers and the Springfield Falcons.

Jurco, who had four goals and six assists in 14 games with the Falcons, joins the top team in the AHL for their playoff run. The Checkers feature Julien Gauthier, Spencer Smallman (who has been injured) and Callum Booth (who has been up-and-down between the AHL and ECHL).
