HALIFAX - The Saint John Sea Dogs moved into playoff position on Friday night.
After weeks of struggling to gain any kind of ground on the 16th-place Shawinigan Cataractes, the Sea Dogs earned a point in one of the most unlikeliest of games - a Friday night matchup against the Memorial Cup hosting Halifax Mooseheads in front of a sold out Scotiabank Centre.
Brady Burns tied the game with 2:14 remaining in the third period, sending the match into a shootout which ended with the Mooseheads taking the contest 5-4. The single point is all the Sea Dogs needed to leapfrog the Cataractes.
Both Saint John and Shawinigan will enter the final day of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's regular season with 32 points - with Saint John holding the first tiebreaker. The Sea Dogs will visit the Moncton Wildcats tomorrow while the Cataractes will face the Victoriaville Tigres on home ice.
Benjamin Gagne, William Poirier and Nicholas Deakin-Poot also scored for Saint John. Zachary Bouthillier made 45 saves in the loss.
Arnaud Durandeau scored twice for Halifax while singles came from Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Keith Getson. Cole McLaren made 23 stops in the win.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without forward Yohan Plamondon (injured) along with defenseman Patrick Musico (healthy).
NOTES: Affiliate Carson Gallant remained in the lineup... Brendan Sibley returned to action for the first time since Feb. 23 due to injury... Benjamin Gagne had a goal and two assists, giving him two goals and three assists in his past four games... Halifax has won 12 straight home games... Saint John has lost 14 straight road games... Arnaud Durandeau ends the season with 10 goals in eight games against Saint John.
NEXT GAME: The Sea Dogs close out the regular season on Saturday with a 4 p.m. match in Moncton.
