Notebook: Dogs picks taken in Jr. A drafts

Several Saint John Sea Dogs prospects were selected in junior A hockey league drafts over the past few weeks.

Two members of Saint John's 2021 draft class were picked in the Maritime Hockey League draft.

Round 2, 15th overall - Campbellton Tigers - Ian Dickie
Round 8, 95th overall - Valley Wildcats - Jack O'Blenis

Another six players from Saint John's 2021 draft class were taken in either the Quebec Junior Hockey League's draft or territorial draft. Forward Davide Patella, taken in the fourth-round by the Sea Dogs in 2020, was also picked.

Round 1, 9th overall - Terrebonne Cobras - Davide Patella
Round 4, 40th overall - Gatineau Flames - Francis Woods
Round 5, 62nd overall - West Island Shamrocks - Kananga Mangala
Round 7, 88th overall - Côte-du-Sud Everest - Eliott Simard

Montreal-Est Rangers - Vince Elie
Joliette Prédateurs - Renaud Lalancette
Gatineau Flames - Nicolas Bilodeau

Most if not all of these players should be attending Sea Dogs training camp next month (fingers crossed).

ROY INTERVIEW
Former Sea Dog and current Sherbrooke Phoenix forward Joshua Roy spoke a bit on his playing time in Saint John with the Daily Faceoff Prospect Show.

THN DRAFT RANKINGS
Speaking of Joshua Roy, the forward was ranked 73rd for the upcoming NHL Draft in The Hockey News' final rankings.

Roy was ranked one slot below his former teammate, Sea Dogs forward Peter Reynolds, who was listed at No. 72.

Cam MacDonald, meanwhile, was ranked 106th.

The NHL Draft takes place virtually July 23-24.

LELAND RETURNS
The Acadie-Bathurst Titan announced last week that Greg Leland will return for another season as an assistant coach.

Leland was an assistant with the Sea Dogs from 2007-08 until 2014-15. Leland joined the Titan in the summer of 2020 after spending four seasons as the head coach and general manager of the MHL's Campbellton Tigers.

During his eight-year run in Saint John, Leland helped the team win two President Cup championships and a Memorial Cup.

The Titan also announced the return of head coach Mario Durocher, assistant coach Dennis Martindale, goaltending coach Adrien Lemay and equipment manager George White.

The Titan are coming off a strong season that saw them reach the Maritimes Division final where they fell to the Charlottetown Islanders. They are expected to contend for the division title again this season.

TREMAINE RETIRES
Former Sea Dogs forward Mark Tremaine has retired from professional hockey, the ECHL's Newfoundland Growlers announced on their website last week.

“It’s been tough,” said Tremaine, who recently completed his education degree at StFX.

“The game has been a huge part of my life forever and I always wanted that chance to play pro. For a long time over this past year, it was in my mind that five games wasn’t enough. But you get out of it for a short period of time and you realize it would be tough going into a rookie season as a 27-year-old. Up until a couple of weeks ago, I was still considering my playing options. In the end, for me, the biggest thing is being involved in the game. That’s something I’m going to do for the rest of my life.”

Tremaine "is set to move out west to British Columbia for a new opportunity that combines his love of education and hockey," the story reads.

Tremaine spent the 2014-15 season with the Sea Dogs, recording 14 goals and 25 assists in 57 games as an overager. He went on to play five seasons at StFX and appeared in five contests with the Growlers prior to the COVID-19 shutdown last year.
