Islanders force Game 5

The Charlottetown Islanders aren't done just yet.

The Islanders staved off elimination by hammering the Shawinigan Cataractes 7-0 Thursday in Game 4 of the President Cup final. The Cataractes, who entered the game up 3-0 in the series, could have won their first Quebec Major Junior Hockey League title with a victory in this contest.

The series now shifts back to Charlottetown where the Islanders will host Game 5 on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Charlottetown once again heavily outshot Shawinigan in the opening period but had little to show for it, leading 1-0 with shots 21-8. But finally the Islanders' consistent offensive zone time turned into goals, scoring four times in the second and adding two more in the third.

William Trudeau and Brett Budgell each scored a pair. Jakub Brabenec had a goal and three assists while Xavier Simoneau added four helpers. Francesco Lapenna, who has had a rough series, made 16 saves in the shutout win.

Former Saint John Sea Dogs forward Dawson Stairs had one assist and one shot in the win.

The Cataractes not only lost the game but may lose one of their top defensemen, Zachary Massicotte, to a suspension.

The OHL final resumes Friday while WHL action resumes Saturday. In the OHL the Windsor Spitfires lead the Hamilton Bulldogs 2-1 while in the WHL the Edmonton Oil Kings lead the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-1.

The winners of each series will advance to the 2022 Memorial Cup in Saint John, which is set to begin June 20.
