SAINT JOHN - Former Saint John Sea Dogs forward Joshua Roy netted his first career NHL goal on Wednesday.

Roy scored in the Montreal Canadiens' 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils. The 20-year-old was playing in just his third NHL game after getting recalled from the AHL's Laval Rocket last week.

Roy, the first overall pick in the 2019 QMJHL Entry Draft, spent his first one-and-a-half seasons of junior hockey with the Sea Dogs before being traded to the Sherbrooke Phoenix.

SCHEDULE TALK
QMJHL commissioner Mario Cecchini spoke with the Wildcast Podcast on his trip through New Brunswick last week. Cecchini had a few interesting comments on potential changes to the league's schedule and the format for this year's QMJHL Entry Draft in Moncton.

NEW TROPHY
There's a new trophy in the QMJHL.

On Tuesday, the league announced "the creation of the Mario-Lemieux Trophy, which will now be awarded to the regular season’s top goal scorer."
Sea Dogs forward William Dufour would have won the award in 2022 after scoring a league-leading 56 goals.

MAYER TO FINAL
Former Sea Dogs goaltender Robert Mayer and Swiss-based Genรจve-Servette HC will play in the Champions Hockey League final next month.

Genรจve-Servette earned a spot in the championship game with a 3-2 semifinal win over Lukko Rauma on Tuesday.
Mayer has appeared in six champions league games this year, posting a 3-3-0 record to go along with a 2.01 GAA and .918 SV%.

The Champions Hockey League features the top teams from across Europe going head-to-head. Genรจve-Servette will face Skellefteรฅ AIK of Sweden in the final on Feb. 20.

THE FULL TOUR
Former Sea Dogs assistant coach Stefan Legein has completed the tour.
Legein was an assistant coach with the Sea Dogs for four seasons before joining the WHL's Spokane Chiefs last season.

BALLARD SIGNS
Former Sea Dogs forward Harrison Ballard has signed with the GOJHL's Caledonia Corvairs.
Ballard, who was held pointless in seven games with the Sea Dogs last season, has not played anywhere this year, according to Elite Prospects.

The 19-year-old also played in 20 OHL games with the Soo Greyhounds last season.

Oddly enough, the Sea Dogs were raffling off a Ballard jersey at Thursday's home game.

OTHER STUFF
  • The Gatineau Olympiques won a sixth straight game on Thursday. Mathis Gauthier scored the game-tying goal in the third period and the winner in the shootout.
  • A couple interesting tidbits from Stephane Leroux at RDS: the Drakkar haven't won a playoff series since 2015 and the Olympiques haven't missed the playoffs since 1984.
  • With a 2-1 overtime loss to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Thursday, the Halifax Mooseheads have now lost six straight home games. They're 4-2-3-1 in their last 10 games.
  • Jacob Newcombe returned to the Cape Breton Eagles lineup on Thursday after battling cancer.
  • The ECHL continues to inch closer to 32 teams. The league announced at its all-star event this week that Bloomington, Illinois will be home to the league's 30th franchise next season. Lake Tahoe and Bloomington will both be expansion teams in 2024-25.
