SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs made a game of it but fell 5-3 to the Shawinigan Cataractes on Friday night at Centre Gervais Auto.

The Sea Dogs entered the third period down 4-1 and were getting outshot 26-10 through 40 minutes, once again struggling to create scoring chances. But a Coen Miller goal at 2:36 and a Drew Elliott marker at 9:26 got Saint John within a goal.

Just as it seemed momentum might be shifting in Saint John's favour, Reece Peitzsche scored to make it a 5-3 game and that was how the night would end.

Shots ended 37-18 in favour of Shawinigan. Saint John only had seven dangerous shots.

Former Sea Dogs forward Vince Elie was named the game's first star with a goal and an assist. Along with Elie and Peitzsche, Éli Baillargeon, Felix Lacerte and Jiri Klima scored. Mathys Fernandez made 15 saves in the win.

Eriks Mateiko also scored for Saint John. Justin Robinson made 32 saves in the loss.

This was Saint John's fourth straight defeat. They continue their three-game Quebec road trip on Saturday night against the Victoriaville Tigres.
