Sea Dogs swap overagers

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
The Saint John Sea Dogs swapped overage players on Tuesday.

First, the team acquired 20-year-old forward Drew Elliott from the Drummondville Voltigeurs in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2025 QMJHL Entry Draft. That move was followed by the team sending overage defenseman Mathis Gauthier to the Gatineau Olympiques for a sixth-round selection in 2025.

Elliott is a Saint John native and a graduate of the Saint John Vito's. He's played with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, Charlottetown Islanders and most recently the Voltigeurs.

This season, Elliott has eight goals and seven assists in 34 games.

In 226 career QMJHL games over five seasons, Elliott has 37 goals and 46 assists. He was a second-round pick of the Drakkar in 2019.
Gauthier, meanwhile, was acquired by the Sea Dogs at last June's QMJHL Entry Draft. The defensive defenseman posted five goals and 12 assists in 36 games with Saint John this season. The move will create some more room for Saint John's younger defensemen to get ice time.

Gauthier spent the previous three seasons with the Rimouski Oceanic — which including captaining the Oceanic last year.

The Olympiques currently sit last overall in the QMJHL standings and will need a push in the second half to sneak into the playoffs.

The QMJHL's trade deadline is Jan. 6.
