For the second time this season, the Saint John Sea Dogs have suspended one their own.Today, Director of Hockey Operations Mike Kelly announced that 16-year-old defenseman Gabriel Bourret has been suspended indefinitely.
The Sea Dogs news release stated that Bourret broke the teams “player conduct policy.” No further comment will be issued by the club.
In most professional sports leagues, the player conduct policy has to do with player’s actions outside of the arena.
Bourret was a bit of a surprise at training camp and made the team after being drafted in the sixth round of the 2009 QMJHL entry draft by Saint John. In 23 games this season he has two goals and four assists.
Bourret was not with the team for parts of last week after returning to Quebec for a family members funeral according to Tim Roszell of News 88.9.
The news comes a day after the Sea Dogs outright released two of their most promising defensive prospects in Vincent Fournier and Robert McEwan. No announcement of a possible call-up has been made.
It is unknown when the Bourret will return to the team.
Earlier this season, Nicholas Pard was suspended by the team after getting into a “drunken fight” at a Sean Kingston concert at Harbour Station. Ironically, Pard was thrown out of his building.
The Sea Dogs likely learned from their mistake of releasing information to the public after the Pard incident. The fight was headline news for a over a week.
